Public Engagement Sessions - June 2019

The City held public engagement sessions on June 19 and 22, 2019. Feedback can still be shared online until July 6 to help us adjust the design of the future roadway network. We invite you to help us improve:

  • The criteria that will be used to evaluate the design options

  • Proposed paths and connections for those who bike and walk

  • How we’re proposing to accommodate vehicles where roads and alleys will be closed to Yellowhead Trail between 68 Street and 62 Street

Share your input online until July 6. Input received during Phase 2 engagement will help refine the preferred concept plan that will be shared in fall 2019.

Project Update

During Phase 1 of the concept planning study, the project team met with area residents, commercial property and business owners, and community organizations, as well as those who drive, bike and walk through the area. We discussed impacts of the removal of traffic signals and the potential closure of 66 Street at Yellowhead Trail. We collected feedback and heard how important 66 Street is to local businesses and residents.

Your input helped us develop options for the removal of the traffic signals at Yellowhead Trail and 66 Street, balancing technical requirements for the freeway with the needs of the community, businesses and commuters.

While multiple design options were studied, three options, two of which maintain a north-south connection, will be further developed to determine the concept plan for the area.

About the Project Area

The City has launched a concept planning study for the removal of the signalized intersection at Yellowhead Trail and 66 Street and the closure of the nearby accesses to Yellowhead Trail.

The study will also:

  • Determine how these changes affect traffic operation of the road network in the study area

  • Provide new roadway network solutions

  • Review locations for future pedestrian and cyclist connectivity opportunities

A concept plan for the area surrounding 66 Street was completed in 2012, but did not include plans for the 66 Street intersection.

Where We Are Now

Concept planning for the roadways between 82 Street and 50 Street, including removal of the signalized intersection of Yellowhead Trail and 66 Street, is expected to be complete by the end of 2019.
