Peter Hemingway Pool

Rehabilitation and lifecycle project for the Peter Hemingway Fitness and Leisure Centre.

Project Update - January 2024

The facility remains closed as rehabilitation work continues. Hazardous materials abatement has been completed and major pool basin repair work is ongoing. Replacement of the HVAC and pool mechanical system upgrade is also underway.

Phase one of the project is nearing completion and phase two construction preparation has started. Phase two rehabilitation funding was approved by Edmonton City Council as part of the Spring 2023 Capital Budget Adjustment.

The Peter Hemingway Fitness and Leisure Centre is anticipated to reopen in 2026 in coordination with the new Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre.

Project Overview

The Peter Hemingway Fitness and Leisure Centre opened in 1971 and was identified in the 2019-2022 budget cycle as a priority for rehabilitation to upgrade its 50-year-old mechanical, structural and electrical systems, building exterior and roof. Once completed, this rehabilitation will allow Edmontonians to enjoy the facility for decades to come.

Phase one of rehabilitation includes the replacement of crucial lifecycle equipment, and occupational health-related items, as well as the rehabilitation of the pool basin.

During this phase, issues with the building envelope, mechanical and electrical systems, as well as the pool basin were uncovered. These affected operations and public safety, and necessitated the continued closure of the facility.

Phase two rehabilitation funding was approved by Edmonton City Council in spring 2023. This phase addresses further lifecycle needs of the facility and integration of accessibility and sustainability policies. A major piece of this project is the replacement of the building exterior, the glass curtain wall panels, roofing assembly, lighting, perimeter drainage as well as whirlpool, sauna, steam room, bleachers modifications and a new elevator to improve accessibility.

Facility rehabilitation is designed and constructed with a focus on improved energy efficiency, reduced emissions and improved indoor air quality aiming to achieve LEED certification within the approved scope. Planning and design for this part of the project was coordinated with the City’s Heritage Advisor to ensure the historical significance of the building is respected and protected.

Upon completion, the Peter Hemingway Fitness and Leisure Centre will be connected via a pedway to the Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre.
