Project Update - Spring 2025

Construction of Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre continues. The project is on time and on budget. All major interior and exterior building construction is complete.

Some minor construction work remains, including the connection to and integration of the Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre.

The cycling track has been installed and some minor track railing modifications are being completed. The verification and testing of all building systems is nearing completion, as cleaning and minor installations continue across the facility.

Landscaping work has resumed and is anticipated to be completed in summer 2025.

Once construction is complete the facility will be prepared for the public. Preparations will take several months and will include installation of equipment, fixtures and furniture.

During this time, the facility will be assessed for a Category 2 facility standard designation from the Union Cycliste Internationale (the world cycling governing body).

Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre is anticipated to open in early 2026. Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre, which is being rehabilitated, will reopen alongside Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre as one integrated facility.

About the Project

Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre will be a shared facility that meets community recreational needs, while also creating opportunities for year-round triathlon and cycling training and events.

The project will create more community recreation space and will connect to Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre, an architectural award-winning aquatic centre, through an above-ground link.
Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre will include an indoor cycling track, walking/running track, fitness centre, bouldering wall, gymnasiums, multi-purpose rooms and studios, an indoor play space and more.

Once complete, Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre will be seeking a Category 2 facility standard designation by the Union Cycliste Internationale, which is the world governing body of cycling. This designation qualifies a facility to host World Cups, Continental Championships, Junior World Championships and other national and international cycling events.

The project has been advanced in partnership with the Alberta Velodrome Association and World Triathlon Series Edmonton. Along with a financial contribution, these partners have been engaged in facility design and will hold important roles in animating the centre for community and sport users.

Project Overview

In 2007, Edmonton City Council approved the Medium Term Recreation and Sports Field Plan, which identifies Coronation District Park as a site for the development of a community recreation centre close to Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre.

This strategy was based on an extensive community needs assessment and public consultation. In 2011, planning began for the Coronation Community Recreation Centre project to be an addition to the Coronation District Park site.

Public input was collected in March 2014 after schematic design. The project was put on hold late in 2014 to give facility partners time to fundraise their portion of the contribution toward the project.

In January 2019, the project resumed following funding approval by City Council during deliberations for the 2019-2022 Capital Budget. The project design team validated the existing design with the current standards, codes and requirements.

On November 12, 2020, Council directed that the Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre Project proceed with the completion of design as “Build to Program", meaning the project will provide a large multi-purpose community recreation centre and include the ability to host world-class events year-round with permanent and temporary seating for up to 940 spectators.

Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre will include the following amenities:

  • Fitness centre
  • Walking/running track (333 metres on the outside lane)
  • 250-metre Category 2 indoor cycling track
  • Velodrome spectator seating for up to 940 people, including 264 permanent seats
  • Bouldering wall
  • Sport courts and an urban court
  • Dedicated spin studio
  • Multi-purpose rooms and studios
  • Indoor play space
  • Child minding space
  • One commercial retail unit

The project design was completed in 2021, and construction started in spring 2022. Construction is on schedule. The facility is anticipated to open in early 2026.
