Confederation District Park is being renewed with an anticipated construction start in summer 2021.

Project Update - June 2021

Confederation District Park renewal began in 2016 when the master plan process was initiated. Once the master plan was finalized, the project team began moving forward on the design for renewal and completed public engagement in fall/winter 2020.

Detailed Design

We are now able to share the detailed design for the renewal!

The detailed design shows the renewed park amenities including:

  • New sportsfields that will be relocated and resized so they meet current City standards

  • Installation of new tennis, pickleball and basketball courts, as well as a new running track and jump pit

  • Replacement of sod and topsoil

  • Resurfacing of the asphalt on the laneway at the south end of the park

  • Updates and replacements to the stormwater and servicing system

  • New low-impact development features

The renewal will also include tree-planting, a refurbished park sign as well as updates and replacements to the irrigation system.

Construction is anticipated to begin in summer 2021. We will provide more information closer to the start of construction. We will also distribute bulletins to those who live near the park.

About the Project

Edmonton’s mature neighbourhoods are great places to live and have many treasures including District Activity Parks. These parks serve several neighbourhoods in the larger area and are important for health, wellness and quality of life. They are part of a city-wide park system and support a wide variety of facilities, programs and open space activities.

Confederation Park, 11204 43 Avenue NW, is a District Activity Park located in southwest Edmonton. The City has completed a Master Plan to establish a long term vision for this park.

The master plan and concept plan for the park was created using input and ideas gathered through public engagement. This plan will be used to shape the park’s future, taking into consideration the interests expressed by the public, use of existing amenities, new amenities and activities, operational requirements and City strategies and policies.

Project History

Project Update - April 2021

Planning for the renewal of Confederation District Park is in progress! We are hoping to share a final design with you later this spring but prior to that, we wanted to share the preliminary design.

Preliminary Design

Preliminary Design Details

The preliminary design shows the proposed layout of:

Renewed Park Amenities

These include sports fields, tennis and pickleball courts, jump pit and running track. These will be constructed beginning in summer 2021.

Potential New Park Amenities

These include pathways, trees and vegetation, natural play areas and fitness pods, wayfinding, improved parking and community gathering spaces. These are not currently funded or planned for construction and would only be constructed should funding become available in the future.

The preliminary design was created by taking into consideration the existing Master Plan, current site conditions, project budget, infrastructure renewal needs, City policies and design standards, and the feedback gathered during the preliminary design phase engagement (What We Heard Report).

Construction is anticipated to begin in summer 2021.

Project Update - December 2020

Thank you to everyone who engaged with us virtually and provided feedback on the preliminary design ideas as we adjusted our engagement practices as a result of COVID-19.

Our online survey closed on December 14, 2020. Feedback received from the public, together with technical input, City policies, programs and funding, will inform the Confederation District Park Renewal design. See the What We Heard Report.

In spring 2021, we will present the detailed design plan for the renewal elements in Confederation District Park and provide information on the construction.

Public Meeting - April 2018

The City hosted a public engagement session to gather feedback and perspectives on the final concept for Confederation District Park. The concept and master plan will guide the future of the park.
