Waste Services Container Sharing Program allows adjacent multi-unit properties receiving communal collection of garbage, recycling and food scraps to share containers.
This program addresses space concerns by reducing the number of containers needed per property and is offered at the same utility rate already paid at each of the sharing sites. Sites must either share a property line or be located across the alley from one another to share containers.
Waste allocations will be determined based on the total number of units across all participating sites. Adjustments may be made to container sizes and collection frequency in order to ensure that waste allocation requirements are met for all sites.

Program Conditions
The participating sites must be adjacent to each other, either sharing a property line or located across the alley from one another. The final decision of whether or not two or more sites can share containers rests with the City of Edmonton Waste Services.
Sites will be given containers based on the allocation for the total units of the sharing sites.
Co-location of all three waste streams (food scraps, recycling and garbage) must be maintained. Containers cannot be moved from the designated location except with the approval from Waste Services.
Waste Services is not responsible for removing garbage and other items to ensure collection vehicles are able to access the containers. The City of Edmonton will not mediate between the sites if illegal dumping occurs.
An excess waste program is available for a fee. The program aims to provide extra lifts up to 50 per cent of the property’s monthly garbage allocation. Sites need to register by providing an EPCOR account number for the fee to be charged to.
The program will be offered at no additional expense to the sites and will not result in a reduction of the Utility Rate for the sharing sites.
The City shall not be responsible for wear and tear, or any other type of damage caused to the property of owners, as a result of providing waste collection services in a manner that is reasonably consistent with standard operating practices.
Waste Services retains authority to end this agreement for operational or safety concerns. This will result in containers for three streams to be provided to all the sites.
