Yard waste is collected twice in spring and twice in fall on select Mondays. It is turned into compost, which is offered to residents for free.
Take tree stumps, trunks and large branches (greater than 20 centimetres in diameter) to an Eco Station. Drop off is free.
Use double-ply paper bags (roll closed) or see-through plastic bags (tie closed). Plastic bags that are not see-through, like orange and black garbage bags, will not be collected.
Bundle twigs and branches. Tie with natural twine. Keep bundles smaller than 1 metre (3.3 feet) long and 0.5 meters (1.6 feet) in diameter.
Keep bags and bundles light - under 20 kilograms (44 pounds). Your collector lifts thousands of bags each collection day. If your bag is too heavy to easily carry to the curb, it is too heavy for your collector.
Set out as many bags or bundles as you need. There is no bag limit.
On your seasonal collection day set out bags by 7am, where you normally put your carts.
Add yard waste to your food scraps cart (lid must close). Don’t compact (push down) the material. It can get stuck and remain inside the cart when tipped.
Drop off yard waste at an Eco Station for free. It can be loose or in paper bags. Plastic bags will need to be emptied onsite.
Store material until your next yard waste collection day. We recommend using see-through plastic bags for longer-term storage (more than a week), or in damp storage conditions.
Leave clippings on your lawn. Simply remove the bag from your mower and mulch clippings onto your lawn as you mow. They break down quickly and return valuable nutrients to your soil.
Compost at home and use leaves, twigs and trimmings as mulch to protect your plants and provide them with nutrients.
Collection days are set the fall before, based on when we expect yard waste volumes to be highest. Since weather conditions are difficult to predict, some dates may fall when weather makes yard clean-up difficult, or when there isn’t much yard waste to collect. To accommodate these seasonal variations, we provide 2 collection days each season.
Collection days vary by neighbourhood, but always fall on Mondays. This allows us to use existing trucks and staff who are busy Tuesday-Friday with regular collection. We can service a quarter of the city each Monday, so it takes 4 weeks to service the whole city.
