This project will re-establish Jasper Avenue, from 92 Street to 109 Street, as an Edmonton main street. The project was completed in 2022.
The reconstruction of Thornton Court, south of Jasper Avenue, was substantially completed in 2022. Intermittent road closures and detours will be required throughout the project area starting spring 2023 until fall 2023 as warranty inspections and repairs are underway. Closures will be coordinated with all affected property owners in advance and building access will be maintained at all times.
The goal of Imagine Jasper Avenue and Jasper Avenue New Vision is to restore and elevate the avenue, giving it a consistent look and feel, highlighting the downtown core and providing a safe and enhanced experience for those who walk, bike, drive or use transit. Ultimately, the changes will support area businesses and attract visitors.
Highlights of both sections of Jasper Avenue include wider sidewalks, enhanced street furniture and plantings, new street and pedestrian lighting and full roadway reconstruction.
During construction (spring to fall 2020, 2021 and 2022), traffic will be limited to 1 lane in each direction. Traffic will be restored to existing capacity on Jasper Avenue from 97 Street to 100 Street during the winter. Jasper Avenue from 109 Street to 114 Street will be restored to 5 lanes of traffic during the winter.
Jasper Avenue New Vision is a major catalyst project identified in the (12MB). This plan calls for Jasper Avenue to feature a high quality pedestrian experience, including:
Jasper Avenue New Vision will help achieve City Council’s commitment to transform Edmonton’s urban form and improve livability in the heart of the city. The project area extends along Jasper Avenue from 92 Street to 109 Street.
Jasper Avenue New Vision was approved in 2011 and Phase 1 of construction took place between 100 Street and 102 Street in 2013.
Phase 2 of construction took place between 97 Street and 100 Street from 2020 to 2022. This included the east side of 100 Street from Jasper Avenue to the Funicular, and 97 Street from Jasper Avenue to the Valley Line LRT on 102 Avenue.
In addition, the City has completed concept planning for the avenue from 92 Street to 96 Street and from 102 Street to 109 Street. Timing of construction for these phases has not been determined.
Jasper Avenue, from 92 Street to 109 Street, is an Edmonton main street. With downtown development on the rise, now is the time for transformation.
In 2011, the City published a report, Toward a New Vision for Jasper Avenue (30MB), which contained an inspiring and compelling new vision for Jasper Avenue’s streetscape, as well as a range of important city-building initiatives that will surround it.
The underlying principle of this report is that the revitalization of Jasper Avenue’s streetscape can serve as a catalyst for private sector reinvestment, continued renewal, and positive change throughout the corridor.
On June 14, residents were invited to view the preliminary design for 97 to 100 Street and provide input to shape the concept plans for 92 to 96 Street and 102 to 109 Street.
