Transit signal priority is a name for various techniques to improve service and reduce delays for mass transit vehicles at intersections controlled by traffic signals. These signals, usually a vertical, white bar, can be found above pedestrian walk lights at a number of intersections throughout the city.

Intersection Priority Signals

These are transit-only signals that allow ETS buses to leave an intersection approximately four seconds ahead of the rest of the traffic, even while all other traffic has a red light. These signals permit ETS operators to “jump” ahead of traffic congestion legally. A few seconds of priority at a congested intersection might help more than 40 people make their transit connections. When multiple intersection priority signals are used on the same corridor, they can play a pivotal role in efficiently moving thousands of people every day.

Intersection priority signals in active use by ETS are located at the following intersections:

  • 87 Avenue & 109 Street northbound
  • 97 Avenue & 109 Street westbound
  • 102A Avenue & 101 Street southbound
  • Jasper Avenue & 100A Street eastbound
  • Jasper Avenue & 105 Street westbound
  • St. Albert Trail & 137 Avenue northbound
  • St. Albert Trail & 137 Avenue southbound
  • St. Albert Trail & Anthony Henday Drive northbound
  • St. Albert Trail & Anthony Henday Drive southbound
  • St. Albert Trail & Yellowhead Trail southbound

Cross Traffic Preemption Signals

These are transit-only signals that stop traffic at a major cross street intersection so that ETS buses can safely cross the high traffic volume corridor or complete a turn. These signals are usually placed at intersections that do not warrant a full traffic signal and are often installed alongside a pedestrian crossing. Buses take more time to accelerate from a stop and are longer than passenger vehicles, so a natural break in traffic may be difficult to find without the help of these signals. Prioritizing ETS buses at key intersections is an effective method to help buses maintain a predictable schedule and operate safely.

Cross traffic preemption signals in active use by ETS are located at the following intersections:
