Project Update - September 2025
Zoie Gardner Park
The majority of construction at Zoie Gardner Park is finished. The basketball court equipment still needs to be installed, but has been delayed to late October due to manufacturer delays.
To allow landscaping and sod time to establish, the fencing will stay up until October 15. An opening date will be determined at that time.
As the weather cools in October, the ground will firm up and sod will go dormant. This will allow for foot traffic for the remainder of the fall and into the winter.
When spring approaches, temporary fencing may be installed to protect the sodded areas as those areas become soft and susceptible to damages as the ground thaws.
The washroom building remediation is expected to continue through the fall and into the winter.
The new art mural will be installed on the building in spring 2026. The mural will be reflective of the community diversity and pay tribute to Zoie Gardner and her contributions to the community.
Heraa Khan has been selected to design the murals.
Heraa Khan is a Pakistani visual artist currently living and working in amiskwacîwâskahikan, Treaty 6 Territory. She began her artistic journey studying the traditional Indo-Persian practice of miniature painting. Heraa holds a BFA from the National College of Arts in Lahore and an MFA from the University of British Columbia, Canada. Her diverse practice includes painting, drawing, digital animation and film.
Balwin Park
Construction on Balwin Park is progressing on schedule and is nearing completion. The playground equipment has been installed, along with the hard surfaces and new trail. The rubber playground surfacing is expected to be completed mid September. Site furniture and park lighting are expected to be completed near the end of September. All landscaping and clean up restorations are expected to be completed by the first week of October.
Because new sod and landscaping are very susceptible to damages from foot traffic, the construction fencing will remain in place for a couple weeks after construction has been completed to allow for the new sod and landscaping to fully establish. Fencing is expected to be removed after the Thanksgiving weekend and the park will be open for use.
The new playground in Balwin Park is the first of its kind in Edmonton. Designed by local artist AJA Louden, shown below, the playground was inspired by nature and science fiction. It was created as a place to play, to grow together and to imagine the future.
Belvedere Park
Due to unforeseen drainage issues, the new basketball court required replacement. This work has now been completed. Due to this unexpected work, the overall completion of the park has been delayed to the last half of September. Line painting and basketball equipment installation on the court is expected to be complete by the third week of September, along with final cleanup and landscape restorations.
The City and our contractors would like to thank all residents for their patience and support during the project.
