As part of the 25-year Waste Strategy, the City of Edmonton started winding down its commercial collection services as of October 1, 2019. The City is no longer accepting new Commercial Collection clients.
Waste Services will work with existing clients to ensure the transition is as seamless as possible. The City will continue to meet ongoing obligations under existing contracts.
City-owned sites will continue to receive collection services from City of Edmonton Waste Services.
Please note that the Edmonton Waste Management Centre will continue to accept waste and recycling from other haulers.
If you are a commercial client and presently set out your waste in bags at the curb or back alley (Commercial Hand Collection) or in a communal bin (Commercial Bin Collection), changes are coming to the way you sort and set out your waste.
A letter was sent to all commercial clients stating that the commercial services will no longer be provided by the City and included resources to help clients solicit service quotes from new providers.
After receiving this letter, Commercial Bin collection clients can contact Commercial Waste Services at commercialwaste@edmonton.ca to schedule a preferred service cessation date to help ensure the transition to their new service provider is smooth and convenient.

The City’s 25-year Waste Strategy recommended changes to existing non-regulated business lines, including winding down the current commercial collections business. Going forward, the City’s Waste Services will act as a regulator, providing rules, facilitating market development and providing resources and educational support, rather than participating directly in the market.
Most contracts are month-to-month, and you are free to cancel your contract at any time.
If you plan to begin receiving service from another hauler before receiving the 90-day notice, you can end your contract with the City without penalty. You should work to finalize a contract with a new collection service provider before your City service ends to ensure there is no service interruption.
Please email commercialwaste@edmonton.ca with your account name, number, address, site number and the ideal pickup date for your bins. Please contact us at least two weeks before you want your service to end.

To align with the rollout of residential green carts, the source separated organics program will be rolled out over several years. By 2022, new bylaws will be in place that require all Industrial, Commercial and Institutional waste generators within Edmonton (that is, businesses, non-profits, and institutions) to separate organic waste. Therefore, it is important for City facilities to lead by example in demonstrating successes in organic waste separation. Additional information about organics separation is coming soon.
A complete list of facilities will be posted online soon. In general, City facilities include:
Note: There are many City-owned facilities that are not occupied by City business units, but rather leased to, and operated by, third parties such as non-profit and other organizations. These City-owned facilities are not included in the corporate facilities three stream waste collections rollout.
