Sustainability is an objective that evolves as our city grows and we try to meet the needs of all our citizens. The model that the City has adopted through its strategic plan and the use of Enviso as a management system, provides the means to move towards sustainability.

About Enviso

Enviso is an environmental management system (EMS) that provides a way for our City to both manage and improve our environmental performance. This is done in accordance with the highest international standard for EMS - ISO 14001.

The scope of Enviso applies to all municipal and corporate support services provided by the City of Edmonton.  For a copy of the Statement of Scope for Enviso, please submit an email request to the Corporate Program Manager using the contact information provided below.

ISO 14001

Developed by the International Organization for Standardization, ISO 14001 is a benchmark to help organizations reduce their environmental impact by:
  • Minimizing how their operations negatively affect the environment
  • Complying with applicable laws, regulations and other environmental requirements
  • Continually improving their environmental performance
Achieving and maintaining ISO 14001 registration demonstrates the commitment to City Council's goal of becoming "the nation's leader in setting and achieving the highest standards of environmental preservation and sustainability, both in its own practices and by encouraging and enabling the practices of its partners".

Implementation

The City has opted for the most rigorous implementation strategy: third-party certification to the ISO 14001 Standard. This involves having a third-party auditor perform an independent validation that the EMS conforms to the ISO 14001 standard, and that it is "in place, complete and sufficient."

Edmonton Receives $50,000 from Alberta EcoTrust for Electric Vehicle Study

Alberta EcoTrust Foundation has given the City of Edmonton a grant to Research Electric Vehicle Transition for the City's Light Duty Fleet. The research will allow the City to develop a plan for transitioning our light duty fleet to electric. The plan will look at barriers and opportunities with respect to building types and the electrical grid capacity.

Alberta Ecotrust Foundation is a founding member of the Low Carbon Cities Canada (LC3) network, implemented in partnership among seven local centres across Canada and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. Funded by the Government of Canada, LC3 is part of a national investment in municipal climate action to accelerate urban climate solutions and to meet Canada’s 2030 and 2050 carbon reduction targets.
