The City is responsible for the prosecution of a wide range of offences committed under City Bylaws.
Some examples include:
- Parking
- Zoning
- Noise
- Business Licensing
- Animal Control
If you are charged with a Bylaw offence, you may request a review of your file if you feel you have a valid defence to the charge or if you feel there are significant mitigating circumstances to be considered.
If you would like to have the municipal prosecutor review your file, please follow these steps:
1. Confirm the violation ticket is from the Province of Alberta
Ensure you have received a Violation Ticket from the Province of Alberta. The municipal prosecutor cannot review a Municipal Tag issued by the City of Edmonton.
If your ticket is still at the Municipal Tag stage, you may contact Bylaw and Ticket Administration by phone at 780-496-5161, Monday to Friday from 8:30am-noon and 1-4pm.
2. Select a reason for contacting the municipal prosecutor
There are several reasons why you may wish to speak with a Municipal Prosecutor:
- Disclosure: sharing of all information and documents related to the case
- Adjournment: asking for your court date to be rescheduled to a later date or time
- Ask a question
- Early resolution: requesting a review with the aim to resolve your ticket outside of court. Based on the information you provide, a Municipal Prosecutor may:
- Offer a lesser fine
- Offer a resolution for all of your tickets if you have more than one
- Withdraw your ticket(s)
3. Contact the municipal prosecutor
Please email the municipal prosecutor at municipalprosecutor@edmonton.ca and include the following information:
- Name of the person charged (on ticket)
- Trial date, courtroom and time
- Your address and a contact phone number
- The reason(s) you would like the ticket reviewed
- Any supporting documentation or material (such as photos) you would like considered
You should submit your request for a review as far in advance of your trial date as possible. Generally, requests for reviews are dealt with as they are received and a response may be expected from the municipal prosecutor approximately 2 to 4 weeks prior to the trial date.
