The City of Edmonton's Indigenous Relations Office (IRO) supports National Indigenous History Month by promoting events and activities happening in and around the city throughout June.
To celebrate National Indigenous History Month this June, the City is encouraging residents to take 1 meaningful action each week to learn, reflect and build stronger relationships with Indigenous Peoples and communities.
- Week 1: Explore local events and learning opportunities happening in and around Edmonton throughout June
- Week 2 : Learn about the Indigenous Artist-in-Residence Program
- Week 3 : Learn the Indigenous name of your ward
- Week 4: Learn about Wahigicicobi, the City’s Indigenous Framework, and how its roles of Listener, Connector, Advocate and Partner guide the City’s work with Indigenous Peoples

National Indigenous Peoples Day 2022: Education Special

While Metis people have been known to speak many languages, Michif is considered their official language, which combines elements of Cree and French. Michif is considered to be endangered, as it is mostly spoken amongst older generations.
Family Art Adventures with Lance Cardinal
Lance Cardinal is an Indigenous artist from the Treaty 8 Bigstone Cree Nation territory in Northern Alberta. He incorporates basic words, numbers and colours into the art project where he can, and even features Famous Indigenous Artists and their works.
Indigenous Resources and Events at EPL
Information for and about Indigenous Peoples, including weekly Cree and Stoney language classes, cultural teachings by Nôhkom Jo-Ann Saddleback and opportunities to develop a deeper understanding of reconciliation and how it impacts all Canadians.
