Welcome to the River Valley’s front door! Adjacent to downtown Edmonton and immediately south of the Edmonton Convention Centre, this park acts as a gateway between the urban downtown and the renowned River Valley parks and trails system. The park encompasses 12.9 hectares of land with a 500-metre breathtaking, unobstructed river view. The park is named after Louise Crummy McKinney, an advocate for women's rights and the first woman elected and sworn into the legislature in the British Empire.
What is Shumka? In Ukrainian, Shumka means “whirlwind” and it is used as the name of the Ukrainian dance group: Shumka. This weatherproof performance stage was named after the Ukrainian Shumka Dancers for their contribution to the Edmonton community. Annually, different groups utilize this space for various types of performances!
This covered stage may be booked for weddings, performances and other events. It is located near the Chinese Garden Ting which can be booked in conjunction with the stage for picturesque photo opportunities.
The parking lot located west directly behind the stage is managed by the Edmonton Convention Centre and is not available to be reserved for events. Limited parking is available onsite. Alternative parking is available in the downtown core which is easily accessible through the 100 Street Funicular or Grierson Hill.
Due to ongoing erosion and slope stability concerns, two sites within Louise Mckinney Park will be repaired. The slope on the south side of Grierson Hill and the slope north of the River Valley Adventure building will both be rebuilt with new materials and naturalized. Access to Grierson Hill via the shared-use path and stairs will be maintained throughout construction, while access to the area north of the River Valley Adventure building will be maintained via the shared-use path. The staircase in this area will be closed during construction.
Work will also be conducted on the two south staircases after being vandalized and burned. The staircases will be replaced/repaired to restore use and provide access to the Tawatinâ Footbridge.
