Obtain or Renew Your Pet’s Licence Online

In order to obtain or renew a pet licence, you will now need to set up a login ID and password before accessing the pet licensing system if you don’t already have one. We have added this security feature to further protect your personal information and to align pet licensing with other system requirements used at the City that take online payment.

You will not be able to use the online application in any of these situations:

  • You are applying for a reduced fee because you receive Income Assistance
  • Your dog is "Restricted" as defined under the Animal Licensing and Control Bylaw
  • Your dog is "Nuisance" as defined under the Animal Licensing and Control Bylaw
  • You are applying for a Guide/Assistance dog exemption

If any of the above apply to you, please call 311 for further information.

A major credit card is required for payment (Visa Debit, Debit Mastercard or Interac online are not accepted).

Changes to your account such as password resets and updates to your contact information and email address can be done online or by calling 311.

License Your Pet

Sign up today to get a pet licence online.

Before You Begin Using the Online System

  • Know the birth date of your pet (or an approximation).
  • Know if your pet has been spayed or neutered. If they have, please provide the date of their surgery as well as the name of the clinic where the surgery was performed (if available).
  • Know your pet's microchip or tattoo number, if applicable.

In 2019, cats who are licenced are eligible to receive a microchip. Please call 311 to make an appointment to get your cat’s microchip.

About Pet Licensing

Even indoor pets can slip away and get lost. That's what a licence is for.

A pet licence is a unique ID that tells us your pet belongs to you. It allows us to reunite the two of you more quickly if your pet ever gets lost or displaced in an emergency. It may even get your companion one free ride home each year. Your pet safe and sound — to us, that peace-of-mind is priceless.

Two-Year Pet Licensing Now Available

Two-year pet licences are now available through our improved online system. Based on citizens’ feedback, the updated system has been made more robust ensuring more efficient, faster, and better performance. It’s also mobile-friendly!

Exceptions for the two-year pet licence include:

For 2019, every cat licence purchased will include an optional microchip.

Why License Your Pet

In addition to keeping your pet safe, your licence fees pay for a lot of important things. By licensing you are:

  • Providing food, shelter, medical care and enrichment for approximately 6,000 lost pets and stray animals each year
  • Supporting local rescues and shelters
  • Providing emergency first-aid veterinary care to injured lost and stray animals
  • Funding low income spay/neuter programs
  • Maintaining Edmonton's off-leash parks
  • Supporting responsible pet ownership education and enforcement and animal protection law enforcement

What You Need To Know
  • The maximum number of pets allowed per residence is 6 cats and 3 dogs.
  • You must be 18 or older to license a pet.
  • All dogs and cats must display a City-issued licence tag when off their owner’s property. Cats with a legible tattoo or microchip are exempt; but we strongly recommend wearing the tag for visible identification.
  • If you move, no longer have your pet, or your contact information changes, please let us know.  Information can be updated online, in-person, or by calling 311.
Fines

The fine for not having a valid pet licence is $250...which is a lot more than the licence fee! All cats and dogs over 6 months of age — even indoor pets — must be licensed and you need to renew your pet licence every 12 months.
