There are now over 80 community gardens across Edmonton, supporting local food growing, active, healthy lifestyles and more connected and vibrant neighbourhoods.

A community garden is a shared space where neighbours come together to grow food, learn from each other, and build community. Gardeners share access to land, water and sunlight while working side-by-side to create and care for a thriving green space.

Community gardens offer something for everyone. They help you to:

  • Grow your own food
  • Beautify your neighbourhood and park spaces
  • Meet neighbours and build community
  • Learn and share gardening skills
  • Enjoy outdoor recreation for all ages

How the City Supports Community Gardens

The City of Edmonton supports Community Gardens by:

  • Making City parkland available for gardens.
  • Supporting Urban Agriculture by creating new zoning categories: Urban Gardens, Urban Outdoor Farms and Urban Indoor Farms.
  • Reducing barriers: no development permit needed for most community gardens on parkland. Some features (like water lines, large sheds or permanent structures) may still require permits.
