Project Update - January 2020
The final plan for the corridor has been completed.
Based on feedback received from residents along 53 Avenue during the design phase, the project team has refined the plan to incorporate public feedback, while meeting City design standards and aligning with current City policies, standards and directives. A What We Heard Report was prepared which summarizes the feedback received. Highlights of the changes to the plan include:
North sidewalk between 141 Street and Whitemud Drive:
The refined plan proposes a 2.3 metre wide sidewalk on the north side of 53 Avenue between 141 Street and 143 Street, instead of the originally proposed shared-use path. A 3 metre wide shared-use path with a boulevard (green space between road and path) is still recommended from 143 Street to Whitemud Drive.
Missing sidewalk connection (south side of 53 Avenue, east of 142 Street):
The design has been adjusted to a 1.5 metre wide sidewalk instead of the original 2.3 metres. As a result, there will be minimal impact to the adjacent properties. Although narrower, the proposed sidewalk will still enhance walkability and accessibility of the area and will improve safety for pedestrians travelling along the corridor.
Some residents along 53 Avenue identified speeding issues, specifically around the cul-de-sac. To address this, the refined plan proposes a narrower roadway and extending the existing median east of 141 Street to discourage speeding along the road.
