Project Update - Summer 2024
The Mill Creek Pool Rehabilitation Project is complete. The pool reopened on Monday July 8, 2024.
The majority of the rehabilitation involved “behind-the-scenes” work, upgrading and replacing the filtration, disinfection, mechanical and electrical systems to ensure the facility aligns with current building codes, as well as health and safety standards. Anti-entrapment drains were also installed, improving the pool’s safety and ensuring it meets the latest Alberta Pool Safety Standards.
The rehabilitation also included:
- A zero-depth entry which enhances accessibility for all pool users
- The addition of inclusive and accessible change rooms and washrooms
- A new water slide
- A sundeck, picnic and seating area
- New paint across the facility
- A new Mill Creek Outdoor Pool sign and new wayfinding signage
Project Overview
The Mill Creek Outdoor Pool, Mill Creek Outdoor Pool, one of Edmonton’s most popular outdoor pools, opened on June 22, 1953, and was selected for rehabilitation in 2018. The planning and design of the rehabilitation project was completed in spring 2022, and a project budget of $7 million was approved in June 2022.
In 2020, the pool had to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Following that, Mill Creek Outdoor Pool remained closed to comply with new Alberta pool standards introduced in 2019. These standards addressed health and safety systems, including anti-entrapment measures, water chemistry, and recirculation requirements.
Construction for the Mill Creek Outdoor Pool Rehabilitation Project started in August 2022. The rehabilitation mainly involved work that pool users may not notice, but is very important to safety. The facility now aligns with current building codes, as well as health and safety standards, and is more accessible for users, thanks to the zero-depth entry into the pool.
The rehabilitation is now complete, ensuring the pool remains a beloved and sought-after summer destination.
