The Jumpstart Inclusive playground at Clareview District Park was completed on time and on budget in fall 2020.

Jumpstart Inclusive Playground

In partnership with Jumpstart Charities, the City built an inclusive playground at Clareview District Park. Jumpstart Charities provided an in-kind contribution valued at over $1 million which included playground equipment and rubber surfacing.

Jumpstart’s vision is to create large-scale, accessible playgrounds in each province and territory across Canada. This vision is in line with the City’s Live Active strategy. Leveraging universal design principles, Jumpstart’s mission is to ensure these playgrounds become the standard for inclusivity by creating imaginative and accessible spaces where children of all abilities can share in the magic of play.

Project Overview

This playground has been designed by leading experts in adaptive and inclusive play. Leveraging universal design principles, Jumpstart’s mission is to ensure these playgrounds become the standard for inclusivity by creating imaginative and accessible spaces where children of all abilities can play.

Multiple sensory and quiet areas have also been considered and incorporated into the design. Inclusive play opportunities fit with the City’s corporate accessibility policy, ensuring all people are treated with respect, with equitable access and opportunity to participate to the fullest extent in the city.

The Clareview District Park and Community Recreation Centre site was selected through a process that considered 13 potential sites. The Clareview site aligns with Jumpstart’s criteria for the new playground due to its proximity to the recreation centre, public library, public transit, parking and other amenities such as sportsfields. As an active indoor and outdoor recreation site, the Clareview District Park is a destination for many surrounding neighbourhoods as well as Edmontonians city-wide.

At 16,000 square feet, this accessible playground was one of several built across Canada with the help of Jumpstart funding. The playground serves local schools, daycares and organizations in the area as a safe, inclusive outdoor space for the local community. It will be a key attraction to the Clareview Community Recreation Centre.
