Fire Prevention Officers oversee new construction, interior and exterior inspections, demolition, as well as fuel tank installation, removal and permits. They also review development permits and construction site Fire Safety Plans.
Fire Prevention employees are responsible for providing services and implementing programs that help reduce the number of fires that occur in Edmonton.
Fire Prevention Officers deliver these programs and services across each division within Fire Prevention, as well as permits and other services that include, but are not limited to:
- File / Legal property inquiries
- 311 referrals
- Public Safety Compliance Team
- Project watch
- Assembly occupancy Night Operational Patrol
- General fire safety inquiries
Through the City’s Quality Management Plan (QMP), Fire Prevention Officers are also charged with conducting an average of 16,000 inspections each year to ensure buildings in Edmonton are in compliance with the National Fire Code - Alberta Edition.
The QMP also includes all other requests for services such as shut off notices, fire drills, business licences, occupant load calculations and Fire Safety Plan reviews.
With proper documentation, Fire Prevention Officers may issue:
- Firework permits
- Pyrotechnic permits
- Dangerous goods transportation permits
- Open air burning permits
- Fire performance permits
- Fuel Storage Tank System Permits

Technical Services
District Inspectors
The city is divided into several, different geographical work areas. District Inspectors carry out the thousands of inspections within the Quality Management Plan in their assigned work area, as well as false alarms, business licences and occupant load calculations.
Special Events
These Fire Prevention Officers assist City of Edmonton event staff in ensuring all events within the City limits meet Fire Safety Regulations.
Public Education
Knowledge sharing is a valuable tool in enhancing fire prevention. Through lectures, Fire Prevention Officers educate the public on fire safety, arson prevention and the dangers of neglecting fire hazards. Lecture requests are reviewed by these officers to best determine if the requests meet current criteria.
