Remember, trains need time to stop. Whether you’re walking, driving or biking, there are rules in place to help you stay safe around LRT tracks and stations.

To help ensure your safety and to avoid a possible fine, please follow these rules:
  • Obey all gates, warning bells and pedestrian lights
  • Look before crossing the tracks
  • Stand behind the bumpy yellow strips

Safety When Walking, Biking or Rolling Across LRT Tracks

Be alert and only cross at designated safe crossings. LRT trains can come from either direction on any track, at any time.

  • If there are gates and lights, always wait behind them. Never cross when the arms are down and lights are flashing.
  • If there are no gates, always follow pedestrian signs and signals to cross the road and tracks safely.
  • Always stop, look both ways and listen before crossing the tracks.
  • Cross quickly and never stop on the LRT track.
  • Use pedways, underpasses or crosswalks to avoid crossing tracks when possible. Underpasses and pedways are monitored by security cameras.
  • When the platform is not in the middle of the tracks, do not shortcut across the tracks to get to the opposite platform. A train may be coming from the opposite direction.

  • Use extra caution when making turns at intersections where LRT operates.

 Rail Safety Art Contest

In early 2026, ETS partnered with Harry Ainlay High School and Louis St. Laurent Junior and Senior High School to help promote rail safety among students. Young artists from these schools submitted designs contemplating the importance of stopping, waiting and being vigilant around rail crossings in order to stay safe.

Students were asked to think about what would resonate with them and their peers and to help promote safe actions when near trains and train crossings. The results were an array of different interpretations around the same theme, displaying a range of styles, some more literal and others more abstract. Centrally, each considers the question of why it is important to wait at a train crossing.

These beautiful pieces of art aim to encourage people to stop and think about the rail crossing and to respect the danger of trains passing by.

The artwork can be found at the LRT crossings along 111 Street at 40 Avenue, 43 Avenue, and Whitemud Drive.
