Edmonton's Community Energy Transition Strategy  is the path forward for a low carbon city and is the City of Edmonton’s climate change mitigation plan. Approved by City Council on April 19, 2021, The Community Energy Transition Strategy will help shape Edmonton’s future economy and the way Edmonton is built—transforming how energy is generated, how people move around the city, how buildings are constructed, all through the lens to ensure a just and equitable transition.

Targets

Achieving transformational change means setting ambitious targets. The following targets reflect a community-wide accelerated energy transition journey. We are just starting to accelerate our journey, and like any journey we will have to regularly reflect on our progress and adjust our plans as needed to successfully reach our goals and targets.

2025

Reducing community-based net greenhouse gas emissions by 35% (compared to 2005 levels)

2030
  • Reducing community-based net greenhouse gas emissions by 50% (compared to 2005 levels)
  • Reduce energy consumption by 35% per person by 2030 (compared to 2005 levels)
  • Generate 10% of Edmonton’s electricity locally
2050

Achieving net zero per person GHG emissions

Pathways

The Community Energy Transition Strategy is centered around four(4) bold and transformative pathways. The four(4) pathways below are areas of transformative action and are interconnected to achieve Edmonton’s low carbon future. Each pathway has goals that set out what needs to be achieved for a low carbon, prosperous and just and equitable future.

Revising the 2015 Community Energy Transition Strategy

Project History

Phase 1

September 2019 - July 2020

  • City Council directed administration to update the Community Energy Transition Strategy and declared a climate emergency in August 2019.
  • The City requested input from public and targeted stakeholders on the actions/solutions identified to achieve the Climate Shifts from September 2019 to May 2020. This input will inform the draft of the Strategy.
  • An interim report providing a project update and proposed accelerated climate actions was presented to City Council in December 2019.
  • A draft of the revised Strategy will be presented to City Council in the fall of 2020.

Phase 2

August 2020 - December 2020

  • The City seeks advice from the general public and targeted stakeholders on how to implement the proposed solutions/actions in Edmonton from August to October 2020. This input will inform the final updated Strategy.
  • The final revised Strategy will be presented to City Council in early 2021.

Public Engagement

Key stakeholders were engaged to ensure that the proposed climate shifts, policies and actions capture the best practices, innovations and ideas, and that its implementation will be achievable in Edmonton.

Engagement with targeted stakeholders and the general public were divided as per the 2 phases listed in the project timeline. The input from the various engagement sessions will help inform the updated Strategy that will be presented to City Council for approval in early 2021.
