City Council makes appointments to approximately 20 civic boards and encourages those with a desire to share their passion, time and skills to serve as a board member.

Being a board member is an opportunity to provide your voice to decisions and services that shape our community. It is also an opportunity to sharpen leadership, business skills and gain a broader understanding of municipal government processes.
The time commitment varies depending on the board. Most boards have monthly meetings plus subcommittee meetings, and may have additional board-related activities throughout the year.
New Council Policy C628A Honoraria and Expenses for City Agencies, and Procedure: Honoraria and Expenses for City Agencies, is effective January 1, 2022.
This policy applies to Council-appointed members, who are not Members of Council, of all advisory committees, ad hoc committees and task forces, and the following decision-making bodies:
(Members may opt out of receiving an honoraria if they choose).
For Non-City/External Agencies - the Board's Recruitment Profile will include details if remuneration/honoraria is provided.
Recruitment for new board/committee members takes place annually in December/January for up to 17 boards.
Edmonton City Council values the diverse voices of citizens in local governance and commits to appointing individuals that are reflective of the population of the City and that have been recruited through a fair, equitable and inclusive process.
Applications are accepted using the Taleo Online Application System. However, if you require the application in MS word format, please contact the Civic Agencies Team to request. Applicants must complete the application questions and attach a resume, by the application deadline. Tribunals applications (for the Assessment Review Board, Community Standards and Licence Appeal Committee, and Subdivision and Development Appeal Board) require their resumes to include the names of 3 references (with phone and email details), who will be contacted for shortlisted candidates. For all other Boards, 2 reference letters will be required from candidates that are shortlisted.

Most appointment terms are for 1 year (while some have 2-year terms), renewable for up to 6 consecutive years. Prior to reappointment, board members are evaluated. The evaluation criteria are outlined in Schedule 2 - Re-Appointment Form (Summary of Evaluations for Members Eligible for Re-appointment) of Procedure: C575D - Agencies, Boards, Committees and Commissions.
