Providing matching grants to cover a portion of renovation costs to commercial storefronts.

About the Program

Great storefronts support great businesses and contribute to attractive, lively commercial main streets. The Storefront Improvement Program provides matching reimbursement grants for improvements to ground-floor commercial storefronts located within Business Improvement Areas and other Council-approved commercial streets.

There are two grants available under the Storefront Improvement Program:

  • Storefront Improvement Grant
  • Storefront Refresh Grant

Please note that any projects which have begun construction prior to being approved for the Storefront Improvement Program are not eligible for grant funding.

Storefront Improvement Grant

The Storefront Improvement Grant helps commercial building owners invest in large, impactful storefront renovations.

Grants cover up to 50% of renovation costs to a maximum of $25,000 per building. Corner buildings are eligible for a grant of up to $30,000, or a grant of up to $50,000 if the second side of the building facing the sidewalk has at least 50% street-level glazing and an entrance, patio, or some other active use.

The next application periods are:

  • September 1-31, 2019; and
  • January 1-31, 2020

Applications submitted outside these application periods will not be accepted. Please note that application periods may be cancelled if all funding is allocated during a prior application period. We strongly encourage you to apply early.

Storefront Refresh Grant

Small changes - big effect! If you have a smaller improvement project in mind for your commercial building, you may be eligible for a Storefront Refresh Grant which may include renovations such as new exterior paint, repairs to existing awnings, or upgrading existing exterior light fixtures. The Storefront Refresh Grant is currently operating as a pilot program.

Grants cover up to 50% of the cost of improvements, to a maximum of $1,000 per building. Improvements must be completed within six months of approval to be eligible.

The program is first-come first-serve and there are 25 grants available in 2019. Applications will be accepted starting July 1, 2019. Once these grants are allocated, a new set of grants will become available as of April 2020.
