Speed Check sign in a 50km per hour zone

Encourage safe speeds in your neighbourhood by requesting a speed check sign.

The Safe Speeds Toolkit has been discontinued. For traffic safety programs in school areas, visit School and Playground Zones.

People of all ages and abilities deserve to feel safe when walking, rolling, cycling, driving or taking transit in Edmonton. Speed check signs can address concerns about speeding in your neighbourhood by bringing attention to vehicle speed and reminding drivers of the 40 km/h default speed limit.

The City’s Safe Mobility team distributes and moves speed check signs across Edmonton year round. Community members can request signs in their neighbourhoods. Speed check signs are usually placed in a neighbourhood for two weeks before being moved to serve another community.

Due to an ongoing high volume of requests, deployment of a speed check sign at your requested location may take up to 18 months.

The speed check sign program is one important action within the Safe Mobility Strategy 2021-2025, Edmonton’s approach to advancing Vision Zero.

Request a Speed Check Sign

A speed check sign is a community-led, City-enabled tool to address concerns about unsafe driving speeds at the neighbourhood level. It is designed to help change the culture and attitudes around speeding in our communities.

Let’s figure out together if a speed check sign is the right approach for addressing the safety and livability concerns in your neighbourhood.

To learn about other traffic safety programs in Edmonton, visit Vision Zero: Traffic Safety. If you have any questions, please contact us at saferoads@edmonton.ca.

Please tell us more about the location where you would like to see a speed check sign. Our team will review your request and whether we are able to place signs in your neighbourhood.

The physical placement of these signs are carefully selected based on the type of road, the surrounding environment, and any unique considerations that need to be taken into account. The quantity of signs deployed to your school is dependent on availability.
