Information on seniors programs for property tax deferral and home adaptation or repair.
Seniors Property Tax Deferral Program
Edmonton seniors can take advantage of financial assistance offered through the Seniors Property Tax Deferral Program by the Government of Alberta.
This program enables eligible senior homeowners to defer all or part of their property taxes through a low-interest home equity loan with the Alberta government.
If you qualify, the Alberta government will pay the residential property taxes directly to the municipality on your behalf. You re-pay the loan, with interest, when you move or sell the home, or sooner if you wish.
To be eligible, you must be 65 years or older and have a minimum 25% equity in your home. The home also must be your primary residence—where you live most of the time.
This program is voluntary, so it is up to you whether you wish to apply. Applications for the current year must be received by the Government of Alberta by May 31 to ensure payment can be made by the June 30 payment deadline and avoid late-payment penalties.

Seniors Home Adaptation and Repair Program
The Seniors Home Adaptation and Repair Program (SHARP) allows seniors to use their home equity to remain in their homes and maintain their independence. Eligible seniors can apply for a low-interest home equity loan with the Government of Alberta to cover repairs, adaptations and renovations to their primary residence.
