In 2021, Hermitage Park will be rehabilitated to ensure Edmontonians can continue to enjoy this valued asset for many years to come.

Project Update - May 2021

The preliminary design was completed in fall 2020 with construction planned to start in June 2021. The project will include the following:

  • Asphalt road surfaces are to be removed and replaced

  • Lighting fixtures on the main park access road parking areas will be upgraded

  • Asphalt parking lot areas to be redeveloped

  • Wayfinding and descriptive signs will be updated to current City standards

  • Approximately 3kms of existing asphalt trails to be replaced

  • Replacement of 2 staircases at the north end of the park

Project Overview

Hermitage Park is located in the northeast end of the city and is an important part of Edmonton’s river valley. The park is filled with natural trails, a large off-leash dog area and picnic sites. This park provides users a variety of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.

In 2021, the City will rehabilitate the park roads, parking lot and entry and wayfinding signage to extend the life cycle of the park infrastructure and provide citizens the ability to continue to enjoy the park site for many years to come.

The purpose of this project is to replace the aging park infrastructure that has deteriorated over time due to heavy usage and weathering. The park has been identified as in poor condition and in need of repair and replacement.

The Hermitage area attracts a high volume of users; therefore keeping the City asset in good repair contributes to a safe public space that supports the goal of a healthy city.

Project Timeline

build phase

Construction is anticipated to be completed and is dependent on impacts of unforeseen site conditions or weather.

Construction is anticipated to start in June and includes renewal of parking lots and roadways, lighting, signage and asphalt trails. The main access road will be closed for the duration of construction followed by a closure of the north road while reconstruction of those roads take place. The park will remain open but vehicle access will be reduced.
