A new school park site will be developed in 2021 in the Chappelle East area in south Edmonton.

Project Overview

The City is currently in the planning phase for a new school community park site located in the Chappelle East neighbourhood in south Edmonton. The Chappelle East Park site will serve the needs of a new kindergarten to grade nine (K-9) school in the area, currently under construction by the Edmonton Public School Board. The Garth Worthington School is scheduled to open in September 2021 and will provide recreation amenities to the Chappelle neighbourhood. The park site may also be used by surrounding neighbourhoods.

Park Development

The park development will consist of:

  • Site grading
  • Possible installation of a catch basin to collect rainwater run-off
  • Topsoil and grass seed
  • Sportsfield development for baseball/softball and soccer fields for a variety of younger age groups
  • Shared-use pathways with lighting
  • Tree planting

The Chappelle East Park design also provides a placeholder for future shared level development amenities as per the Urban Parks Management Plan (UPMP).

It is anticipated construction will begin in spring 2021 and will be completed in fall 2021 to coincide with the opening of the school. However, this schedule may be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainties it brings.

Park Design

Sports Fields

The design of the park aims to provide the residents of Chappelle community and students of Garth Worthington School with an attractive open space for active and passive recreation. The base-level design has been created with input from the Edmonton Public School Board, sports fields operations, maintenance and bookings. The sports field development for school and public use is the focus of the park development, however when not in scheduled use, these flat open spaces provide an opportunity for free play activities such as frisbee, informal ball games or a community event or gathering.

The landscape of Chappelle East Park will include a mix of ornamental tree planting and naturalized groves consisting of native trees and grasses. Naturalized landscapes aid with maintaining ecological diversity in urban environments, provide habitat and the long grasses will aid with cleaning stormwater run-off by trapping particulate matter before it runs into city stormwater infrastructure. The naturalized groves might also be useful as an educational focus for the school.

A 3m wide asphalt shared-use path will provide access through the park from adjoining streets and include a walkway link to the school. Some seating is also proposed adjoining the pathway.

The park design also includes a location for a possible future shared level development, such as a playground or similar community features as per the UPMP. Shared level development is not part of this base-level development project.

Proposed Sports Fields

Ball Diamond

The ball diamond, with an 84m (275’) foul line and 91m (300’) centre field, will accommodate a wide range of age groups and different diamond sports such as baseball, softball, fastball and slo-pitch. The diamond will also contain a shale infield and is planned to be bookable.

West Soccer Field

This soccer field will be 91m (300’) x 55m (180’) for players in the U15 category. It is age appropriate for the Garth Worthington K-9 school and could accommodate adult play.

The U7/U9 fields, 55m (180’) x 30m (100’), share the footprint of the U15 field. The smaller field sizes have been identified to be in great demand.

East Soccer Field

This soccer field will be 73m (240’) x 46m (150’) for players in the U11 category. It is age appropriate for the adjacent Garth Worthington K-9 School.

The U5 fields, 46m (150’) x 24m (90’), share the footprint of the U11 field. The smaller field sizes are in great demand.

Proposed base-level development design of the Chappelle East School Park site.
