Enhance your curriculum delivery with a one-week active learning program at a City of Edmonton Recreation Centre.
This program is designed for Kindergarten to Grade 6 students.
Active Living School is an opportunity for students to:
- Develop physical literacy through a variety of activities
- Become familiar with our recreation centres
Our goal is to break down barriers, helping students gain confidence and stay active for life.
Students will be introduced to facility staff and operational practices, participate in physical activity sessions and be encouraged to take part in daily reflection through journaling. Students will experience:
- Facility modules that enhance students' familiarity with the Recreation Centre such as a Facility Tour, Lifeguarding 101, How the Pool Works and Ice Making.
- Four physical activity sessions led by certified instructors and professional program leaders.
- Amenities such as recreational skating and swimming*.
*Please note: for swimming, students under the age of 8 years old are required to be within arm's reach at all times while in the water. A 1 adult:3 child ratio is required.
Program Fee: $925
Please note: transportation cost and arrangement is not included and is the responsibility of the school.

Students will:
Receive a full facility tour of the recreation centre to allow them to see all the amenities that are available.
Have the opportunity to interview 2 staff members to learn about the important roles and responsibilities each one has at the facility
Inspiring the practical student, this session will focus on the equipment and operational needs of pools. Students will be brought behind the scenes and shown what goes into making and keeping the water crystal clear.
Lifeguards will educate students on pool chemistry and first aid practices. Students will learn the important role that lifeguards play in our recreation facilities.
Students will:
- Be guided through the ins and outs of ice operations by arena staff
- Gain an appreciation for ice and the process of making it
This includes an introduction to equipment, a private walk-through and the creation of their own mini arena!
Water safety is paramount to enjoying life and its many activities, both indoors and outdoors. Aquatic instructors and lifeguards review the do's and dont's around water, and use several techniques to get the students thinking about water safety.

In this fun-filled and fast-paced class, students will enjoy exploring a variety of movement skills including running, jumping, twisting, kicking, throwing and catching!
Students will engage in a variety of games, activities and sports to help develop agility, balance, coordination and speed. Through these games and sport-specific drills, they will learn fundamental skills to keep them active.
Students will learn body awareness, balance and basic strength training through a variety of circuits, obstacles and relay activities.
Students will have an opportunity to participate in a sport, such as soccer, basketball, pickleball or volleyball. Through games and sport-specific drills, they will develop their motor skills, endurance and strength.

Learn basic kickboxing techniques and self-defense skills in this recreational class. This fitness-focused program is designed to foster student’s development through physical activity in a fun, non-competitive environment.
This dynamic class combines the benefits of cardiovascular training as well as self-defense techniques. Improve coordination, strength, agility and quickness through drills that are sure to keep your student’s interest.
Welcome to the world of movement!
In this creative program, students will have fun navigating the world of obstacles and dance, developing their physical literacy through fundamental movement skills as they challenge themselves with various obstacle courses and dance movements.
Through imaginative play and self-discovery, students will enhance their physical and social skills while increasing their self-confidence.
Run, jump, crawl and climb through obstacles.
Obstacle courses force every student to test their balance, stamina and agility. This class incorporates a lot of different activities.
Note: Equipment is facility dependent.
Jump on board with us for a yoga adventure! Bark in downward dog, hiss in cobra pose and flutter your wings in butterfly.
Balance on your surfboard and stretch up tall like a tree. This fun class will open new doors to health and relaxation!
Designed exclusively for kids, Zumba Kids classes are rockin', high-energy fitness-parties packed with specially-choreographed, kid-friendly routines and all the music kids love, like hip-hop, cumbia and more.
This is an exciting, high-energy fitness class. Students will:
- Participate in a variety of fun, developmentally-appropriate activities
- Learn basic strength training techniques
- Participate in relays
