Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) provides service within the city boundaries, as well as to and from the Edmonton International Airport. There are a variety of transit agencies that provide transit service to the other municipalities in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region, including connections in Edmonton.

Regional Arc Use

ETS riders use Arc to pay their fare on all Edmonton metropolitan regional transit services except Leduc Transit. Edmonton offers several Arc period passes, which are only valid on ETS routes. These include school board passes (excluding U-Pass), PATH, ETS@work, and senior low-income annual pass, as well as the senior annual cap.

Arc card tapped against an arc validator on a bus

However, some regional services provide discounted youth passes through their local school boards. Please check with your local transit service to confirm information about these programs. For post-secondary students who reside outside of Edmonton city limits, all regional transit services provide unlimited transit to students with a valid U-Pass.

Paying With a Credit/Debit Card

Transit riders across the Edmonton region can pay for transit (except on Leduc Transit buses) by directly tapping a physical or digital credit or debit card on an Arc validator. To ensure access to fare concessions (youth/senior/Ride Transit) and daily/monthly fare caps, riders need to link their preferred payment method to their myArc.ca account. Physical and digital versions of the same card are considered to be two different cards, and will have separate fare caps, so ensure the same version is linked to the myArc.ca account and is used consistently.

Please note: if you have a period pass (like a U-Pass, school board Arc card or seniors’ annual pass), you cannot tap to pay directly with credit or debit because these passes are pre-paid and valid for a set period of time.

Fare Capping

Only fares paid on ETS buses, DATS and LRT contribute towards ETS fare caps. If an ETS rider taps both on and off within Edmonton city limits on a regional bus, and if they have not reached the ETS monthly fare cap, their fare will contribute towards that regional municipality’s fare cap.

If an ETS rider has not reached the ETS fare cap and travels on a regional bus to an area outside of Edmonton, they will be charged a commuter rate for that regional service. The fare paid will contribute towards the fare cap for that regional service. Once ETS riders reach the ETS monthly fare cap, they are not charged for travel on any regional commuter or local buses throughout the full region, both within and outside Edmonton city limits.

Tapping On and Off

Tapping on and off provides the system with the information it needs to calculate the correct flat rate fare.

If a rider does not tap off, the system will instead calculate a temporary Missing Tap fare. When using regional buses within Edmonton, this Missing Tap fare may be more than the flat rate fare.

Paper ETS and Regional Transfers

Only valid St. Albert and Strathcona County Commuter transfers are accepted on ETS. Valid ETS transfers are only accepted on St. Albert or Strathcona County Transit buses.

When travelling within Edmonton, ETS transfers can be used on St. Albert or Strathcona County buses without an additional surcharge. When travelling in either St. Albert or Sherwood Park, or travelling between St. Albert/Sherwood Park and Edmonton, valid ETS transfers may be used with the payment of a $2 surcharge.

Note: There are no regional surcharges associated with Arc cards or tickets. ETS paper tickets and Family/Day passes are no longer valid fare on any service.

Load, tap and go. Arc can be used on several regional transit systems.

Private Charter Bus Service

As part of our support for regional travel, ETS facilitates access for several private charter bus services (Canada Bus, Rider Express, Banff Tours and Flixbus) at specific stops at select ETS LRT stations and transit centres. This helps to support travel between regional transit services and inter-regional services offered by these companies.

Private charter bus carriers are solely responsible for their own operations, schedules, fares and customer service. Their vehicles may also have different accessibility standards. Riders should check with the carrier directly for more information about their services.
