Program Overview
The City of Edmonton has partnered with Strathcona County to further explore hydrogen fuel technology options for heavy-duty fleet vehicles in order to advance sustainability efforts and reach net zero emissions in the region by 2040. One of the early barriers to the adoption of hydrogen for local municipal fleets is the lack of reliable hydrogen fuelling infrastructure. The mobile hydrogen fuelling project aims to address this challenge by deploying and testing 2 mobile hydrogen fuelling stations in Edmonton that will supply hydrogen-capable municipal vehicles in the region.
The mobile hydrogen fuelling project is helping municipalities across Alberta become familiar with hydrogen technology. The proven efficacy of hydrogen fuel technology for municipal fleets in the Edmonton region could jump start wider adoption of hydrogen for heavy-duty vehicles operating in similar climates around the world. This could lead to economic growth in the transportation, hydrogen development and sustainable fuel industries in Alberta.
The City’s current fleet vehicles being fuelled by the mobile station includes:
- Three hydrogen fuel cell Hyundai Nexos
- Two Toyota Mirai vehicles
- One Hydrogen fuel cell electric transit bus
- Five dual fuel vehicles - two transit buses, a semi truck and two waste collection trucks
As hydrogen expands across the City’s fleet, the mobile fuelling stations will service more heavy-duty fleet vehicles including Class-8 semi-trucks and Class 7-8 vocational vehicles such as dump trucks, refuse trucks and plow trucks.
