An Indigenous business is recognized as a business that is 51 per cent or more owned and controlled by First Nations, Inuit or Métis, individuals, groups or organizations. Before entering into a contract with the City, you may need to provide heritage verification for your company to prove Indigenous ownership.

Proof of Ownership

The currently accepted proof of ownership includes one of the following:

  • Proof of registration with the Federal Procurement Strategy for Indigenous Business (PSIB), the federal Indigenous business registry
  • Proof of certification with the Canadian Council for Indigenous Business (CCIB) (Certified Indigenous Business categories)
  • Proof of certification with the Northeastern Alberta Aboriginal Business Association (NAABA) as an Aboriginal-owned business
  • Proof of membership with the Alberta Métis Works business registry
  • A letter from an Indigenous Nation or Band Council indicating business owner's membership in the Nation Band or community along with incorporation documents that indicate the business owners, confirmed by a Corporate Registry Search

Collection Statement: Personal and Business information is collected to inform the development of a reference list of Indigenous Businesses and will be used and shared by City of Edmonton Departments and/or contractors who may be bidding or working on large projects with the City of Edmonton. Collection is authorized under section 4(c) of the Protection of Privacy Act (POPA) and is managed and protected in accordance with the Act. The City intends to input the information into an automated system to generate content or make decisions, recommendations or predictions in accordance with the City of Edmonton Generative AI Standard.
