All our school programs are currently taking place at our outreach locations.
Let's get your students excited about art! The City Arts Centre offers fun, interactive workshops for kindergarten to grade 9 based on the arts curriculum. We'll help students explore their creativity and express themselves.
Experienced artists lead all sessions, and all necessary supplies are included.
Workshops We Offer
The City Arts Centre provides hands-on workshops in:

- Pottery
Length of Activities: 1.5-2 hours
Group Size and Adult Supervision
- Group size is program-specific and is noted in the program descriptions
- Adults are required to remain with their group and supervise students during the program
- Additional students and adults may not be able to participate in the programs due to supply or space limits
- Adult supervisors are admitted free of charge based on the following ratios:
- Grades K-6: 1 adult per 5 students
- Grades 7-9: 1 adult per 10 students

Program Description
Wheat is an important part of Alberta’s rich history. Discuss the cultural connections Canadians have with bread. Step into our kitchen and:
- Learn how to make homemade bread from scratch
- Take home a small loaf of bread to share with your classmates
Students will learn the basics of bread making under the guidance of a professional baker.

Program Description
A fun and yummy way to celebrate the holidays with your class! Step into our kitchen and:
- Learn how to create edible works of art for any holiday (Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Mother’s or Father’s Day)
- Learn the basics of decorative icing and piping under the guidance of a professional cake decorator
This program is also an exciting way to explore cupcake or cookie decorating for Career and Technology Foundations for junior high students.

Program Description
Make a tasty connection to the curriculum by exploring an ancient technological innovation: sushi. While sushi is culturally connected with modern-day Japan, it originated in China in the 3rd century B.C. as a way of preserving fish using rice. During this fascinating and delicious program, we will:
- Talk about the cultural connections of sushi to Asia
- Expand our culinary skills by learning special techniques to roll and shape sushi rolls for the class to share

Learn some new steps, work your body and have fun in this high-energy dance class. Your class will be guided through the latest hip-hop moves coordinated to popular dance music. Students will love listening and moving to the music while working up a sweat.

Program Description
Take your students’ artistic endeavours to the next level with this fascinating and fun introduction to watercolour painting. During the creative session, first outline a native insect to Alberta using wax-based crayons and then add watercolour paint and watch as the colourful paint pools and interacts to create colourful masterpieces.
Choose from 1 of the following themes:
- Flying insects in Alberta forests
- Crawling insects living in Alberta's Rocky Mountains
- Creeping insects native to our Prairies
Leave with a finished watercolour of an ant, bee, butterfly, caterpillar, dragonfly or beetle.

Program Description
Build your own classroom community! Students will:
- Create a base and learn simple techniques to create their very own 2D plaque in clay
- Add creative details to make their own community to include pets, family and caregivers
- Discuss how communities around the world are both similar and different to the ones we find in Alberta
This project makes a unique holiday gift.
Note: Fired work will be ready for pick-up approximately 3 weeks after the program.

Program Description
A bear, a wolf or a reptile? It’s all up to you. Students will:
- Learn the basics of handling clay
- Create a unique handbuilt sculpture of a Canadian animal, suitable for keeping in the classroom or giving as a gift to a loved one
Note: Fired work will be ready for pick-up approximately 3 weeks after the program.

Program Description
Learn to make a coil pot from clay. Did you know the clay used for this project comes from Alberta? Embracing materials exploration, students will:
- Each make a coil pot, adding slab-formed shapes to its surface
- Explore adding details, texture and pattern to their 3D coil pot, getting inspiration from the work of Canadian artists
Note: Fired work will be ready for pick-up approximately 3 weeks after the program.

- Individuals with diverse abilities/accessibility arrangements
Register Your School or Group
(2024/25 School Year)
All programs need to be booked a minimum of 3 weeks in advance.
Cancellation and Rescheduling
You are required to submit a written notice of cancellation of your program(s) via email to artsattractionsbookings@edmonton.ca.
- Programs cancelled with 30 days notice or more will not be charged the program fee or a cancellation fee
- Programs cancelled with 8-29 days notice are subject to be charged 50% of the program fee
- Programs cancelled within 7 days notice or less, the full program fee will be charged
In the event that a class arrives late, the school will still be charged the full fee and the program will end at the originally scheduled time.
