City Arts Centre School Programs

Please note: bookings for the September 2024 - June 2025 school year open June 3, 2024. Requests submitted prior to this date will not be processed.

The City Arts Centre is excited to offer your class creative experiences! Our workshops, based on the arts curriculum for kindergarten to grade 9, allow students to explore and express themselves through hands-on activities. All workshops are taught by professionals in the field.

We offer 1.5 to 2 hour workshops:

Group Size and Adult Supervision

Group size is program specific and is noted in the program descriptions below. Adults are required to remain with their group and supervise students during the program. Additional students and adults may not be able to participate in the programs due to supply or space limits. Adult supervisors are admitted free of charge based on the following ratios:

Grades K-6: 1 adult per 5 students
Grades 7- 9: 1 adult per 10 students

Cooking

Bread Making (Kindergarten - Grade 4)

Wheat is an important part of Alberta’s rich history. Discuss the cultural connections Canadians have with bread from kolach to pretzels. Step into our kitchen and learn how to make homemade bread from scratch. Students will learn the basics of braiding bread under the guidance of a professional baker. Take home a small loaf of braided bread to share with your classmates.

Cupcake or Cookie Decorating (Grades 4-9)

A fun and yummy way to celebrate the holidays with your class! Step into our kitchen and learn how to create edible works of art for any holiday (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter). Students will learn the basics of decorative icing and piping under the guidance of a professional cake decorator. This program is also an exciting way to explore cake or cookie decorating for Career and Technology Foundations for junior high students.

Japanese Sushi Rolls (Grades 5-8)

While sushi is culturally connected with modern-day Japan, it originated in China in the 3rd century B.C. as a way of preserving fish using rice. During this fascinating and delicious program, we will talk about the cultural connections of sushi in Asia, expand our vocabulary with Japanese words for different types of sushi and finally make vegetarian sushi rolls for the class to share.

Dance

Hip Hop (Kindergarten - Grade 6)

Pick up some funky new steps, work your body and have fun in this high energy dance class. You will be guided through the latest hip hop and funk moves coordinated to popular dance music. Your students will love listening and grooving to the music while working up a sweat.

Visual Arts

Watercolour Creepy Crawly Insects (Kindergarten - Grade 3)

Take your students’ artistic endeavours to the next level with this fascinating and fun introduction to watercolour painting. During the creative session, first outline a native insect to Alberta using wax based crayons and then add watercolour paint and watch as the colourful paint pools and interacts to create a colourful masterpieces. Choose from one of the following themes:

Flying insects in Alberta forests
Crawling insects living in Alberta Rocky Mountains
Creeping insects native to our Prairies

Leave with a finished watercolour of an ant, bee, butterfly, caterpillar, dragonfly or beetle. Please inform us of your subject choice at the time of booking.

Watercolour Landscapes (Grades 4-6)

Take your students’ artistic endeavours to the next level with this fascinating and fun introduction to watercolour. Students will learn about different brush strokes, work with light and shadow and play with techniques that can only be achieved with this medium. Choose from one of the following themes: Northern lights over an Alberta forest, an Alberta Rocky Mountain sunset, or a bold Prairie landscape. Please inform us of your subject choice at the time of booking.

Pottery

My Community Plaque in Clay (Grades 1-3)

Build your own classroom community! Students will create a base and learn simple techniques to create their very own 2D plaque in clay. Add creative details to make their own community to include pets, family and caregivers. We will also discuss how communities around the world are both similar and different to the ones we find in Alberta. This project makes a unique holiday gift. Fired work will be ready for pick-up approximately 3 weeks after the program.

Canadian Animal Masks in Clay (Grades 3-6)

A fox, an owl or a beaver? It’s all up to you. Students will learn the basics of handling clay while creating a unique clay masks of a Canadian animal, suitable for hanging in the classroom or giving as a gift to a loved one. Fired work will be ready for pick-up approximately 3 weeks after the program.

Coil Pots in Clay (Grades 4-9)

Learn to make a coil pot from clay. Students will learn about fascinating Canadian artists and discuss the use of clay in Indigenous communities and how it affects the way we make and view art.

They will then each make a coil pot, adding slab-formed shapes to its surface, to create imagery inspired by Canadian artists' work. Fired work will be ready for pick-up approximately 3 weeks after the program.

Cancellation and Rescheduling

You are required to submit written notice of cancellation of your program(s) via email to a rtsattractionsbookings@edmonton.ca.

Programs cancelled with 30 days notice or more will not be charged the program fee or a cancellation fee. Programs cancelled with 8-29 days notice are subject to be charged 50% of the program fee. For programs cancelled within 7 days notice or less, the full program fee will be charged.

In the event that a class arrives late, the school will still be charged the full fee and the program will end at the originally scheduled time.
