Qualifications Needed

These basic qualifications are the same for all positions. See below for additional requirements for specific positions.

  • Grade 12 or General Education Development (GED) or equivalent qualifications and experience.
  • Proven ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions in English.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's licence or operator's licensing equivalent (non-probationary & non-graduated).
  • Held a valid operator's licence for the last 3 consecutive years.
  • Selected applicants must provide a minimum 5-year Driver's Abstract showing no more than 3 demerits (or equivalent) and no more than one (1) moving violation within 5 years and no past, or pending license suspensions nor Criminal Code suspensions or convictions within 5 years. Non-driving related suspensions of registry services if indicated, must show a reinstatement date.
  • Demonstrated success dealing with the public in a position that requires excellent interpersonal, problem solving, conflict resolution and independent decision making skills.

Hours of Work

Position Hours
Conventional Transit Operator - Full Time Various hours of shift work (straight or split shifts), any time of the day, any 5 days of the week.
First year: guaranteed minimum 67.5 hours biweekly. Thereafter: guaranteed minimum 74 hours biweekly.
DATS Operator - Full Time Various hours of shift work (straight or split shifts), any time of the day, any 5 days of the week, up to 40 hours per week.
DATS Operator - Part Time Various hours of shift work (straight or split shifts), any time of the day, any 5 days of the week, up to 20 hours per week if in a Part Time 40 position or up to 30 hours per week if in a Part Time 60 position.
Community Service Operator Various hours of shift work (straight or split shifts), any time of the day, any 5 days of the week with shifts starting as part-time, progressing to full-time based on availability and length of service.

Salary

Post-Training: $28.87 – $36.09/hr
Full and Part Time DATS Operator - Full Time Training: $25.65/hr
Post-Training: $28.76 - $33.26/hr
Community Service Operator Training: $23.38/hr
Post-Training: $25.98 – $28.87/hr

Training Period

DATS Operator - Full Time 5 weeks (25 days)
DATS Operator - Part Time 5 weeks (25 days)
Community Service Operator 3 weeks (15 days)

  • Applicants will be tested
  • Must pass an enhanced police security clearance
  • Must pass a pre-employment medical examination, including a physical demands analysis assessing walking, squatting, lifting and twisting
  • Must successfully obtain and be in possession of valid Alberta Air Brakes Certification prior to training

DATS Operator - Full Time
