Firefighting is a challenging, demanding, exciting and fulfilling career.
The recruitment process for Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) is competitive, multi-stepped and extensive. Candidates who move successfully through all stages of the process are placed on an eligibility list for consideration to be hired as a Firefighter. Advancement and placement is based on the applicant’s performances in each stage.
Applications will be accepted from March 1-31, through the City of Edmonton Jobs page, for potential recruit classes to be hired the following year.

- Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position; an overall satisfactory Driver's record is required
- Hire is dependent upon a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Information Check
- Good physical fitness is required - evaluated at fitness test stages
- Ability to understand and communicate clearly and concisely in English under stressful conditions
Certifications / Licences Required*
You must upload the following documentation (valid proof of registration/enrollment is accepted) as part of your application. - High School Diploma or equivalent
- Minimum Valid Alberta Class 3 driver’s licence with Air Brake Endorsement (or provincial equivalent)
- International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) Basic Provider certificate or Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) certificate. Certificates must be valid for 18 months from your application date. Proof of an updated program may be accepted. The course must be completed prior to the interview phase. (estimated July)
And one of the following certifications:
- Certified NAIT Medical First Responder (MFR) - 80 hrs Advanced Fire Aid Alberta (AFA) OHS approved course
- Certified St. John Ambulance Advanced First Aid (AFA) - 80 hrs AFA Alberta OHS approved course
- Certified Red Cross Advanced First Aid (AFA) - 80 hrs AFA Alberta OHS approved course
- Current Emergency Medical Responder, or EMT-A or EMT-P Certification (Alberta College of Paramedics (ACP) approved)
- Current Primary Care Paramedic Certification
- Advanced First Aid Courses or higher levels of medical training of minimum 80 hour certification which are not listed may be approved after review
Any of the above certifications must be issued within the previous 36 months of your application to this position. *Current ACP registration not required.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to address all the requirements, meet deadlines and be available to attend scheduled assessment dates.
To succeed in the demanding fire-rescue environment, firefighters must have specific skills. The aptitude test content areas are:
- Understanding oral information
- Reading and understanding written information
- Numerical skills
- Maps, diagrams, and mechanical reasoning
- Teamwork and public relations
Applicants (by invite only) will be advised of the location and time of the aptitude test. The aptitude test must be written on location in Edmonton; no out-of-town or supervised exams will be allowed. There will be no re-writes.
A non-refundable $50 payment to the City of Edmonton will be required prior to writing.
Physical Fitness Test
Applicants' physical fitness is tested to ensure they possess the physical capabilities necessary for firefighting. The University of Alberta's Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation administers this test.
A non-refundable $367.50 payment to the City of Edmonton will be required prior to participating in the physical fitness test.
Physical Fitness Test
Interviews will be conducted by representatives from Fire Rescue Services and Human Resources from September-October 2018.
A grouping of the highest-ranked applicants will advance to the Station Assessment stage, based on performance in the Aptitude Test, Physical Fitness Test and Panel Interview.
Applicants will be assessed by a crew after spending approximately 8 hours with the Fire Rescue Services crew between October-December 2018.
Only applicants who meet the requirements of the Station Assessment will be considered for advancement to the next stage.
EFRS determines the number of applicants to be placed on an eligibility list based on the outcomes from the recruitment process. The eligibility list will be valid until December 31, 2019. This date may be extended at the discretion of the Fire Chief.
Once EFRS determines the need for a recruit class, successful candidates will be notified.
The following steps will then be implemented:
During the process, applicants are responsible for the accuracy of the information they provide. If confirmation is received that information was withheld, falsified or misrepresented by any source, applicants will not be considered for employment. A confirmed misrepresentation could lead to an offer of employment being rescinded and/or dismissal at any point during employment.
