About the Program

Royal Gardens was chosen for reconstruction beginning in spring 2019 with completion in fall 2020.

Neighbourhood reconstruction is a type of neighbourhood renewal that involves road reconstruction and repaving, as well as replacement of streetlights and reconstruction of sidewalks, curb and gutter. Alley renewal is not part of neighbourhood reconstruction. It also includes the opportunity for 2 local improvements, sidewalk renewal and decorative streetlights.

Project History

Project Update - December 2020

The 2020 Royal Gardens construction season began in early May and concluded this October. This was the final year of the 2-year neighbourhood renewal work. The entire scope of work planned for the neighbourhood is now complete.

Project Update - August 2020

The 2020 Royal Gardens construction season began in early May. This is the second year of the 2-year neighbourhood renewal work. The entire scope of work planned for the neighbourhood in 2019 was completed and crews have picked up where they left off for 2020.

Almost all–99%–of the concrete and underground work planned for 2020 is complete. By the start of August, road reconstruction, full-depth reclamation, milling and paving of the roadways was well underway.

Construction Update - Spring 2020

In spring 2020, we are entering the second year of planned 2-year construction for Royal Gardens. The 2019 construction season was a success and we completed all planned construction from 43 Avenue north to 44A Avenue, west of 111 Street to west of 117 Street apart from deficiency work. Deficiencies include any areas where the new infrastructure has flaws such as cracks in new concrete. The 2020 construction seasons will include 43 Avenue south to 40 Avenue, west of 111 Street to west of 117 Street and Petrolia.

Construction Update - Spring 2019

Construction is now underway in Royal Gardens. The construction includes removal and replacement of street lighting, public sidewalk, curb and gutter, as well as reconstruction and paving of the road.

The May Bulletin contains important project and contact information for residents and property owners, as well as a map of Royal Gardens which identifies the scope of work planned for 2019. The Prime Contractor working for the City will deliver bulletins outlining the estimated start/finish dates of each portion of the project, along with their contact information.

The City thanks residents and property owners for their patience as we make these improvements.

Project Update - January 2019

Thank you to those who attended the Royal Gardens Neighbourhood Renewal Event on Tuesday, January 29 to view the final designs for your neighbourhood and learn more about what to expect during the planned 2-year construction.

The final neighbourhood designs were developed based on the feedback received throughout the public engagement process from January to November 2018, and also considered City policies, programs, and technical considerations. The final neighbourhood designs include:

Upgraded residential streets, including measures to slow traffic
Improvements to existing bike routes
Park and green space enhancements
Improvements to pathways and walking connections

Attendees also had the opportunity to participate in the sidewalk Local Improvement decision.

What We Heard Report

Project Update - November 2018

Thank you to everyone who attended the Royal Gardens Preliminary Design Event on November 8 to share feedback on the preliminary design for new and renewed infrastructure in the neighbourhood. The designs included:

Upgraded residential streets, including measures to slow traffic
Improvements to existing bike routes
Park and green space enhancements
Improvements to pathways and walking connections

The preliminary designs are based on the feedback received throughout the public engagement process, which started in January 2018 and also considered technical requirements and City policies and programs. Information was provided about the next steps and staging for construction, beginning in 2019, as well as the Royal Gardens Park Community Garden project, a community group-led initiative. We also gathered feedback on enhancements to the public space around the Petrolia Mall commercial area.

What We Heard

Draft Concepts Public Event - June 2018

The City hosted a public event on June 27 where participants were asked to provide their feedback on the initial draft concepts for new infrastructure in Royal Gardens. The concepts included open spaces, parks, traffic, connections, off-leash dog areas and bike routes in Royal Gardens, as well as improvements to the public area next to Petrolia Mall. The City also asked for comments on which improvements should be prioritized in support of the vision, core values, and community needs for Royal Gardens, as identified at previous engagement events.

Vision Confirmation and Community Options Public Event - May 2018

As a follow-up to the Community Walk and Ideas Workshop held in February, the City held a Vision Confirmation and Community Options event in May. The goal was to solicit advice on the community vision and core values as well as gather input to refine the design options and shape what will be included in the final neighbourhood renewal designs.
