All City of Edmonton Single Trip Over-Dimensional / Overweight permits are now issued through the Government of Alberta’s TRAVIS Permitting System.

Annual permits for the City of Edmonton will continue to be issued by the City of Edmonton. Please email a renewed copy of Provincial Annual Permits to roaduse.permit@edmonton.ca.

An overweight vehicle is any vehicle requiring an overweight permit as defined in Alberta Regulation 315/2002 the Commercial Vehicle Dimension and Weight Regulation.

Overweight permits may be issued by the City of Edmonton to carriers whose loads are permanent and non-divisible.

Road Bans

Restricted roadways are posted with signs showing the required axle weight reduction (expressed as a percentage of the licensed axle weight). Consult the Road Bans Listing for current load bans and prohibitions; bans are reviewed seasonally and annually.

  • A spring road ban comes into effect on March 1 and expires on June 1 each year unless a shorter period is designated
  • A seasonal road ban comes into effect on March 1 and expires on December 17 each year unless a shorter period is designated
  • An annual road ban is from January 1 to December 31 (unless otherwise noted)

Note: Exemptions will not be issued for any road bans.

Roads with thin pavement, oiled roads and some gravel roads must be protected by reducing allowable axle weights. A vehicle on a highway is subject to a road ban if the weight of the carrying axle or axle group of the vehicle exceeds the specified percentage axle weight imposed by the road ban.

Restricted Posted Bridges

A permit is required when the posted weight of a bridge is exceeded and/or an axle grouping exceeds its legal weight.
