Construction between Rabbit Hill Road and Whitemud Drive started in spring 2021.

Construction Update - Spring 2023

Let’s talk construction!

Construction on Stage One over the next year includes:

  • Widening between Haddow Drive and Rabbit Hill Road
  • Adding a shared-use path along the east side of the corridor, along with pedestrian lighting
  • Landscaping including soil placement, tree replacements, new boulevard trees on cross streets and the addition of naturalized grasses

During construction, 2 lanes of traffic will remain open in each direction during peak periods only. No major detours will be required, however there will be traffic flow impacts during off-peak hours.

About the Project

Stage One of the Terwillegar Drive Expansion Program includes all road upgrades to Terwillegar Drive from Anthony Henday Drive to Whitemud Drive. The improvements include:

  • Four lanes in each direction (3 for motor vehicles and 1 dedicated lane for transit. Note: ETS Express Route 31 starts on September 5. Plan your trip)
  • Intersection upgrades, including new left and right turning lanes and shared-use path crossings
  • Bus stop upgrades, including longer pull outs, weather-protected shelters, connections to the shared-use path and lighting
  • Shared-use path on the east side of Terwillegar Drive including connections to the communities and lighting
  • Continued landscape naturalization and additional tree plantings

A noise study was completed which revealed that the current berms and fences along Terwillegar Drive provide sufficient noise mitigation to meet the requirements of the Urban Traffic Noise Policy C506A under both current and future traffic conditions. Additional noise reduction measures are therefore not planned as part of Stage One.

Funding

Stage One is funded by the City of Edmonton through the 2019-2022 Capital Budget and in partnership with the Government of Alberta:

  • North portion (Rabbit Hill Road to Whitemud Drive): City of Edmonton

  • South portion (Anthony Henday Drive to Rabbit Hill Road), shared-use path: Province of Alberta
