A gas permit is required when installing, altering or relocating natural gas equipment.

About the Service

A gas permit is required under the provincial Safety Codes Act when installing, altering or relocating gas equipment such as: furnaces, water heaters, meters, piping and lines, dryers, BBQs, garage heaters, ranges, patio heaters, fireplaces, space heaters, and fire pits.

Line Types and Requirements

New Gas Line: Before a gas meter can be installed the new gas lines require an inspection with approval.

  • Primary Gas Line: A primary gas line cannot be located under an accessory building.
  • Restoring Gas to a Meter: Before the gas service is restored to an existing gas line that has been shut off for six or more months, a re-test is required, which must be inspected and approved by a City inspector. A bonded and licensed contractor must be contacted first to assess the gas line.

Exceptions

A homeowner may not install a new gas line. Only a qualified contractor may do the work.

A primary gas line can not be located under an accessory building.

A homeowner can only apply for a permit for re-testing of an existing gas system if they meet all the following criteria:

  • The gas line is in a single family home
  • The applicant lives in the home
  • The applicant is the owner of the home
How Do I Obtain the Service?

For Homeowners

New home gas work must be completed by a licensed mechanical contractor. A homeowner gas permit is for renovations and or re-test of an existing gas system only. A homeowner must own and occupy the single detached House for which this permit is intended, and perform the work themselves.

    b) Additional details are required for some applications.

    c) Attach a detailed drawing with piping layout including fitting descriptions and sizing, and any specifications to the application, and email to PlumbingAndGasTechDesk@edmonton.ca
     
  3. A permit issuer will contact you by telephone to have you confirm your identity and residency with a government-issued photo ID: driver's licence or equivalent.  You must have the ability to show this to the permit issuer through a video call using Google Hangout, Google Duo, FaceTime, WhatsApp or Skype.
     

  4. Request required inspections by contacting 311.

A homeowner can only apply for a permit for re-testing of an existing gas system if they meet all the following criteria:

  • The existing gas system is in a single family home
  • The applicant lives in the home
  • The applicant is the owner of the home
  • Homeowner must apply for permits in person (address listed below)
  • Complete the Single Family Homeowners Plumbing and Gas Application
  • Include a detailed drawing with piping layout including fitting descriptions and sizing
  • After the work has been completed you must book an inspection by calling 311.

For Contractors

Contractors must be licensed with the City of Edmonton.

Contractors who have an online account may apply for permits and request inspections online.

  3. Send a digital copy to the email address on the application form
  4. After the work has been completed you can book an inspection by calling 311

A permit must be obtained prior to doing the work and booking an inspection.

Inspection Information

After the work is completed an inspection of the equipment is required.

  • All equipment that will be concealed must be inspected and approved before it is covered.
  • If the work has not had an inspection but has been covered, the inspector has the authority to request the area to be opened for inspection.

Booking an Inspection

A permit must be obtained prior to booking an inspection. After the work has been completed and you are ready for an inspection, please refer to the Safety Codes inspection services webpage for information on booking inspections.

In occupied homes, the owner of the home should be the person to book the inspection since they will be required to ensure that either themselves or another adult is there when the inspection occurs. Please advise the type of inspection that is required as well as permit holder's name and phone number and the address where the inspection needs to be done.

Extra Inspections

Additional fees shall be assessed for every inspection requested where any of the following items are found to be deficient:

  • No address on site, building, or suite as applicable
  • Inspector unable to access the building, having been called to inspect
  • Project not ready for inspection, when inspector has been called to do an inspection
  • Inspection called for where previously identified deficiency has not been corrected.

Fees

For Single Detached Homes:

  • For new home construction:
    For any new gas work being done for a new single-family home, the permit fees are included in the  2022 Single Detached House Permit fees , effective January 1, 2022.
  • For existing home renovations:
    2022-All residential permits issued outside of the “House Combo Permit” regardless of scope, the fee is $114 plus a $4.54 safety code fee, effective January 1, 2022.

For Semi-Detached and Duplexes:

For new construction, fees are based on construction value

2022 Fees

Construction Value: Fee  

$0 to $15,000: $176 (1 meter set)  

$15,001 to $500,000: $256 (1 meter set)

$500,001 to $1,000,000: $343 (1 meter set)

$1,000,001 to $5,000,000: $514 (1 meter set)

$5,000,001 plus: $852 (1 meter set)

Each additional meter set $46

Minimum fee of $176/unit or address

The safety codes fee is 4% of the permit cost, minimum $4.50 - maximum $560/permit.

For existing home renovations: $114, plus the $4.50 safety code fee.

Note: These fees apply for commercial and industrial buildings and are for each individual unit in a multi-family dwelling.
