From walkers with multiple features to wheelchairs and scooters, DATS clients who use mobility aids have more options available to them than ever before.

Some new equipment may not fit on DATS vehicles, or may not be able to be tied down securely. If you are thinking of buying a new walker, scooter or wheelchair, or if you know someone who is, please be aware of the following guidelines.

Wheelchairs

The base of the wheelchair (with push rings and attachments) cannot measure more than 30" x 50" (76 cm x 127 cm). Bags attached to the backs of wheelchairs must be compact and fit into the space behind the chair's back. If the wheelchair has handles, bags should not extend past the end of the handles or below the level of the seat. If there are no handles, suggested bag size is 14" wide by 18" high by 6" deep, or smaller (36 x 46 x 15 cm).

Wheelchairs must have a secure, easily identifiable place on the frame for the tie-downs to be attached at approximately a 45 degree angle to the floor. The wheelchair, passenger and parcels/ baggage cannot have combined weight of more than 750 pounds (337 kg).

Scooters

The base of the scooter, including bumpers and other attachments, cannot measure more than 30" x 50" (76 cm x 127 cm) to fit on the DATS bus lift. Bags attached to the backs or sides of scooters cannot extend past the 30" x 50" size limit (76 x 127 cm).

While traveling on DATS, scooters must be tied down separately. Clients will be asked to transfer to a seat for the safety of all on board. Scooters must have a secure, easily identifiable place on the frame for the tie-downs to be attached at approximately a 45 degree angle to the floor. The scooter, passenger and parcels/baggage cannot have combined weight of more than 750 pounds (337 kg).

Note: If you are buying new equipment, please call DATS 780-496-4567 (option 4) to ensure it can be safely secured on DATS vehicles.

Other Considerations

When buying new equipment, ask the vendor if any securement devices (for example, D-rings) can be added to the main frame to ensure safe travel on public transit. Call DATS Client Service Centre at 780-496-4567 (option 4) if you have any questions about securement devices.

Group trips - Please keep in mind how many people and how much equipment will be required on your group trip. Can smaller equipment be used? This may affect trip availability.

For further information on DATS mobility aid or baggage limitations, please call DATS Client Service Centre at 780-496-4567 (option 4) and ask to speak to an Operations Supervisor.

Parcels and Baggage

Please note that DATS operators are not required to help with any parcels or baggage that a client brings onto a bus.

For the safety of everyone on DATS, passengers must limit their possessions to what they can safely carry and hold on their lap. Parcels and baggage cannot block aisles or be placed on the floor of the vehicle.

Accessible ETS

As many DATS clients have discovered, taking accessible ETS buses and the LRT can make travelling a breeze. To use ETS accessible services, keep the following in mind:

  • Optimal dimensions for wheelchairs and scooters are 28" x 48" (71 cm x 121 cm) or smaller, including push rings and attachments, or they will not fit through the doors (note: slightly smaller size allowance than on DATS).
  • ETS may be unable to transport scooters or wheelchairs that are too large or cannot be tied down safely.
  • For everyone's safety, walkers should be folded down to approximately 8" (20 cm) and stowed away from the aisle.
  • Low-floor and community buses can accommodate 2 wheelchair/scooters at a time. Customers with children in strollers are also encouraged to use this space.
  • Passengers must be able to secure their own mobility devices upon entering the bus or should bring along an attendant to assist.
  • DATS registrants can bring along 1 attendant on regular ETS and the attendant does not have to pay a fare.
  • Baggage must be carried on lap and cannot block the aisle.

For information on ETS accessible features, call Transit Information at 311, or BusLink at 780-496-1600. For travel training, contact 780-496-3000.
