The Youth Poet Laureate reflects the life of a city through poetry and acts as a youth ambassador for the literary arts.

Timiro Mohamed

Timiro Mohamed is a 22-year-old spoken word poet, focusing her work on her experiences as a second generation Somali-Canadian. She is a poetry editor for the literary magazine The Drinking Gourd and a co-author of the poetry book Water. Mohamed has competed in the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word. 

She has performed at showcases, the Mosquers Film Festival, and was an opening act for performer Yasiin Bey. During her term as Youth Poet Laureate, Timiro wants to support and mentor other young Edmonton artists from a variety of backgrounds.

Mohamed is Edmonton’s fifth Youth Poet Laureate.

Background

The role of Edmonton’s Youth Poet Laureate is to reflect the life of a city for youth through readings of poetry. As an ambassador for the literary arts, the Youth Poet Laureate incorporates poetry into a range of official and informal City activities. Recognizing that Edmonton has a vibrant arts community in which youth has a strong voice, the selected Youth Poet Laureate will bring that unique voice to the larger city.

Specifics

The Youth Poet Laureate must:

  • Maintain resident status of the City of Edmonton for the duration of the term, provided by proof of mailing address.
    • The term is from November 1, 2019 until August 31, 2020
  • Be within the ages of 13-23 within the entirety of their term

Youth may only hold this position for 1 term and for 1 time.

Responsibilities

  • Perform for City Council (must be original work) at least twice in the term
  • Perform at youth and city-wide events as requested and determined mutually
  • Perform at a minimum of 2 official City of Edmonton functions
  • Assume the role of the youth literary ambassador for the City of Edmonton
  • Create a community poetry project during their term to engage Edmonton youth in poetry
