The peavey closely resembles another timber-handling tool known as the cant hook. The cant hook has the same hooked iron bar with hinge, but it does not have a spike. A log that has one or more slabs cut off is known as a cant. Cant hooks would have been used at John Walter’s lumber mill.
John Walter may have made use of either tool when building his homes and assisting in the construction of buildings such as the McDougall Methodist Church.
