Edmonton has four very distinct seasons, and occasionally we seem to experience them all in one day! The key to enjoying the myriad of activities and events in Churchill Square is to come prepared. From sunscreen to mosquito repellent, here are some simple suggestions to keep our festivals safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Here Comes the Sun

  • Stay out of hot sun between 11am and 4pm
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat
  • Protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses that provide UVA and UVB protection
  • Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or more. Reapply often
  • Drink lots of water to keep yourself hydrated

Lighting a cigaretteSensitivities to second-hand smoke are common. If you smoke, please be considerate of others around you. Smoke in designated smoking areas, away from eating areas and children’s play places. Use ashtrays to dispose of your cigarette butts. Discarding of cigarette butts on the ground is littering and subject to a $250 fine under Bylaw 14614. Learn more about the City’s Cigarette Litter Reduction Program.

Be a Pet - Leave Your Dog at Home

Little girl and dog eating an ice cream coneChurchill Square can be a bustling place, especially during a festival. Crowds of people, loud noises, food smells, and other animals can be overwhelming for dogs, causing them to become agitated or distressed. This can cause an otherwise friendly pooch to bite a person, another dog, or get hurt themselves.

On a warm day, a dog can only last a short time in a parked vehicle before suffering severe brain damage or even death. Pet owners are encouraged to leave their animals at home while attending festivals.

Instead, why not enjoy the benefits of walking your dog at one of the 40 off-leash parks in Edmonton? Visit the Edmonton Humane Society website for more information about keeping your pet safe, happy and healthy.
