Winter Street Maintenance

The City of Edmonton provides various street maintenance measures during the winter months.

About the Service

During the winter months, the City of Edmonton provides various services to keep the streets clean and hazard free for drivers. This includes:

Sanding
We sand the roads as needed with 87 sanding trucks that can operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from October to April.

Snow Plowing
Snow plowing begins when 3 cm of snow has accumulated on the roadway and the weather forecast calls for continued snowfall.

Snow Removal
When snow has been plowed into windrows which affect traffic flow, we start to remove it.  We also send hand crews to remove snow from bridge walkways, stairways, bus stops, fire hydrants, curb ramps and crosswalks.

Snow Fencing
Snow fencing prevents blowing snow from becoming a problem on roadways. We put up snow fencing along certain roads as part of our snow and ice control program.
