Bicycles are permitted on any road in Edmonton. Cycle friendly facilities, such as shared use pathways, bike lanes and bike routes, are specially designed to support safe and efficient bicycle transportation.
Shared-Use Pathways
Shared Use Pathways are off-road transportation facilities open to active mode users such as pedestrians and cyclists.
Edmonton has over 275 km of paved and unpaved shared use pathways, including:
- Shared use pathways adjacent to roadway
- Shared use pathways in the river valley
- Signed shared use sidewalks
- Granular trails
- Unimproved recreational trails
Bike Lanes
Bike lanes are separated on street lanes that may be dedicated to cyclists or shared with other traffic. Bike lanes help protect cyclists from heavy traffic on urban roads.
Edmonton has more than 12 km of bike lanes, including:
- Contra flow bike only lanes
- Shared Bus/Bike/Taxi lanes (24 hour and peak hour only)
Bike Routes
Bike Routes are cycle friendly roads with wider lanes and lower traffic volumes. The may lead to protected crossings like controlled intersections and pedestrian overpasses.
Edmonton has over 105 km of bike routes, including:
- Signed on street bike routes
- Service road routes
