Google on Transit

Edmonton has officially joined the ranks of cities worldwide offering transit trip planning on Google Maps!

Over the past year, ETS staff have been working collaboratively with the City’s Information Technology Branch and Google to bring this new online trip planning service to Edmontonians and visitors to our city.

Google’s trip planning feature is an enhancement to the existing means of providing information to Edmonton Transit riders. It operates using the same scheduling data used by the ETS Trip Planner, but presents it in the traditional Google format that is familiar to so many people – a great advantage for visitors to our city! Trip plan results include a Google map showing the transit trip, departure times, bus stop locations, transfer information, and walking route details.

Transit on Google Maps is available on mobile devices (such as iPhone, Blackberry, and Windows Mobile). That puts trip planning right in the palm of your hand. It’s easy to email the Google transit trip plan too. And, Google Maps supports multiple languages, so it’s convenient for international users.

ETS Community Fair

Come celebrate with us as ETS hosts our first-ever Community Fair event on Saturday, April 25 as part of the celebration for the opening of McKernan/Belgravia and South Campus LRT stations.

The Community Fair is a free, day-long event featuring official opening ceremonies, family-oriented activities, vehicle and information displays, presentations, plus facility and South LRT construction tours.

Be one of the first to ride the LRT to the new stations before the official start of regular services, and enjoy a great day out with the entire family.

Stay tuned for event details.

Quesnell Bridge Reminder

Starting March 1, ETS routes using the Quesnell Bridge to travel from Belgravia Road/122 Street to west Edmonton will have 10 minutes added to their travel time.

Route 33 will also have 10 minutes added to its schedules.

Route and schedule information is available at the
ETS Trip Planner.

TraXSafe Program

ETS is offering the TraXSafe LRT safety orientation program to local schools, organizations and community residents along the South LRT Extension to familiarize them with pedestrian and traffic safety.

In addition to promoting general LRT pedestrian and traffic safety, the program will also address pedestrian, traffic and LRT line conditions that are unique to the McKernan/Belgravia to South Campus portion of the LRT line.

Presentations can be tailored to a range of audiences including students K-12, adults and drivers.  For a TraXSafe presentation or information materials, email traxsafe@edmonton.ca.

2009 Senior Passes

The new 2009 ETS Senior Citizen Annual Pass goes on sale Monday, March 2 at the ETS Customer Service Centre in Churchill Station.

Cost for the Annual Pass is $111.25 (the Low Income Annual Pass costs $48).

We’ll be mailing out renewal packages for annual passes early this month.  The 2008 Senior Citizen Annual Pass is valid until March 31, 2009.

LRT Carpool Parking

The City has introduced reserved carpool parking spots at the Clareview, Belvedere and Stadium LRT park and ride lots as a pilot program to promote sustainable transportation choices.

Carpoolers using the LRT park and ride locations will be rewarded with a prime parking spot as an incentive for commuters to try carpooling.

Five carpooling stalls have been reserved in each of the three park and ride sites and are identified by signs.  To take advantage of the pilot stalls, you must have one driver plus a minimum of one passenger in your vehicle.

LRT Service Disruptions

Buses will replace the LRT from Corona Station to Health Sciences Station on two weekends in March as ETS tests the signal system for the LRT Extension.

On the weekends of March 6-8 and March 13-15, the LRT will stop running south of Corona station on Friday at approximately 6:45pm, while the last train northbound will leave Health Sciences Station at approximately 7pm.

Replacement bus service will go into effect at 6pm on Friday and will remain in effect until the end of service on Sunday night.  Buses will run on a 5 minute schedule from 6pm to 10pm on Friday night and during the day on Saturday.  Buses will run every 10 minutes during late nights and on Sunday.

Service will be increased for the concert on March 8 and the hockey game on March 14.

LRT service between Clareview and Corona Stations will not be affected.

LRT Trains Test New Track

Heading into the home stretch for the opening of the South LRT Extension, there’s going to be quite a bit of activity on the new track as we begin the commissioning phase of the extension.

We’ll be testing all the components and systems to make sure they function properly and the line is safe for public use.  Trains will be running on the tracks between Health Sciences Station and South Campus Station at any time of the day or night until April 25.  All signals, crossing arms and pedestrian gates will be in place and operational before the trains are on the tracks.

Please remain alert and follow all signals at the LRT crossings.
