Transit Peace Officers

Transit Peace Officers (TPO) are on patrol throughout the system every day and night, and they're there to help! There are currently thirty full-time, uniformed TPO's that patrol facilities such as Light Rail Transit (LRT) stations, bus terminals and bus stops in marked patrol vehicles. These TPO's are also active aboard LRT vehicles and buses throughout the city. ETS TPO's are empowered to enforce municipal bylaws, particularly the Conduct of Transit Passengers Bylaw (#8353), and also the Parking Bylaw (#5590) and the No Smoking Bylaw (#13333). You can learn more about these and other City of Edmonton bylaws on the city website.

In 2006, the ETS Safety and Security Division  was authorized by the Solicitor General of Alberta to employ Special Constables and thirty TPO's were sworn in as Special Constables in March of that year. This new appointment provided the authority to enforce several provincial statutes along the transit system in addition to the municipal bylaws already being enforced.

In May of 2007, under the new Peace Officer Act and with the authorization of the Solicitor General of Alberta, the ETS Safety and Security Division became one of the first employers in Alberta to make the transition to Transit Peace Officers (TPO), replacing the previous designation of Special Constable. New uniforms and new vehicle markings, as mandated by the regulations of the Peace Officer Act, are now in place to reflect this change. the ETS Safety and Security Division TPO's are authorized to enforce provincial statutes such as the Gaming and Liquor Act, the Prevention of Youth Tobacco Use Act, the Trespass to Premises Act and non-moving violations of the Motor Vehicles Act, to name a few. Of course, TPO's are still authorized to enforce the municipal bylaws as they always have as the ETS Safety and Security Division Transit Peace Officers.

Since being sworn as Community Peace Officers (TPO), ETS Safety and Security Division Transit Peace Officers have demonstrated their abilities in a variety of situations from providing life-saving first aid to apprehending persons in the commission of criminal acts on ETS property. TPO's are a major part of our commitment to your safety and security while traveling on ETS by responding to undesirable activity, providing First Aid or just helping out by answering your questions. TPO's are trained to deal with your concerns and to provide safe and secure surroundings for all transit customers and employees.

Fare Checkers

An important section within our security team, the ETS Safety and Security Division Fare Checkers actively patrol the LRT system during peak times to help ensure a safe environment for our patrons and staff. Fare Checkers patrol to detect and deter undesirable activity and conduct fare enforcement checks along the LRT system. Fare Checkers also supplement TPO's at LRT stations during special events in order to facilitate the safe and efficient movement of large numbers of patrons following sporting events or concerts.

Compliments or Concerns?

While Transit Peace Officers and Fare Checkers are dedicated to providing a safe and secure environment for ETS patrons, from time to time they are required to interact with violators, ranging from minor offences to disturbance occurring on ETS property.   On occasions their actions may not be readily understood and may be of concern to a citizen.   In other instances, their actions draw praise from members of the public who are uncertain how to formally compliment the TPO or Fare Checker's actions.

Should you wish to compliment or complaint about the actions a TPO, or a Fare Checker, please contact our Professional Standards Unit at 780-496–5747. For further information; Public Compliments or Complaints.
