New Safety and Security Initiatives

ETS is one of the first transit systems in Canada to bring "Transit Watch" into the community. Transit Watch is a public awareness and education campaign that encourages staff and customers to become involved in staying alert and working together to maintain a safe transit environment. The Transit Watch program encourages staff and patrons to be aware and observant and to report suspicious people, items or activities.

ETS also offers "Stop Request" on our buses. For convenience and safety, our Stop Request program allows riders to exit a bus at a safe location other than a bus stop along their route. This program helps to reduce your walking distance. Stop Request is offered every evening from 6pm until the end of service each night. In order to properly use Stop Request, do not ring the bell for your stop. Instead, inform the Operator at least one stop in advance of where you wish to get off and remain near the front of the bus, exiting by the front door when the Operator is able to safely stop the bus.

Safety & Security is a Team Effort

The ETS Safety and Security Division forms only one part of a greater team in a comprehensive safety and security effort. As well as working with the Edmonton Police Service, Emergency Response Department and Emergency Medical Services, the ETS Safety and Security Division cooperates with other stakeholders and programs such as:

Crime Stoppers and Student Crime Stoppers. ETS partners with Crime Stoppers by hosting a booth at Capital X to raise money for these worthwhile programs.

ETS is on board with Neighbourhood Watch crime prevention force in your community. With regularly scheduled bus routes through most of Edmonton, ETS staff members are on the look out for any suspicious activity.

ETS and the Edmonton Safe Parent Association teamed up for another community-building partnership. PSO's are highly-visible members of the community and can be relied upon in an emergency. Each ETS bus and LRT train in equipped with two-way radios, so emergency assistance is only a short call away.

ETS is also a proud sponsor of the D.A.R.E. educational program. D.A.R.E. is an Edmonton Police Service program designed to help students recognize and resist the pressure to experiment with drugs. Through bus advertising and education campaigns. ETS helps to educate youth about problems associated with drug use.
