Southeast to West LRT: Mill Woods to Lewis Farms

What's New
Get involved.
Share your ideas about how LRT stops should look and integrate with your community. Drop-in sessions about Preliminary Design for the SE to West LRT are being held in six consultation areas along the route.
Project Maps: Find Your Consultation Area
Feedback from the Spring 2012 Community Conversations has been used to develop options for how the LRT and its amenities will look, feel and integrate in each area. We want to hear from you again! Tell the design team how you envision these concepts fitting into your community, and learn how pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and residents will interact with the Southeast to West LRT.

Project Background
Public input helped shape the route, stop/station locations and other details during the Concept Planning phase. Council approved the SE and W LRT Concept Plans on January 19, 2011, and the Downtown LRT Concept Plan on February 15, 2012. Now, the City of Edmonton is looking for input regarding:
- The appearance of LRT stops and stations, including landscaping
- Public art opportunities
- How users of all modes of transportation interact with the LRT; pedestrians, cyclists, transit passengers, and private vehicles
- Concerns about the Preliminary Design (current) and upcoming phases of the project
Proposed Alignment Changes
On May 8, 2012 the City’s Transportation Infrastructure Committee (TIC) directed that a Non-Statutory Public Hearing on proposed amendments to the Southeast LRT concept plan be held. It has been requested as the first item of business.
| Date | Tuesday, June 12, 2012 |

Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Agendas (Item 5.1)
The proposed amendment regards:
- relocation of the Operations and Maintenance Facility (OMF)
- relocation of the Transit Centre
- relocation of the Park & Ride
Thank you for your input collected on the proposed amendment changes at the April 3 Community Conversation and through the online survey hosted from April 3 to May 2, 2012.
What We Heard (April/May 2012)
Stage 2: SE to W LRT Community Conversations
In March through early May of 2012, Stage 2 of public consultation for the SE to West LRT was conducted through Community Conversations in six consultation areas along all 27 km of the line. Each meeting included a presentation and small group discussion of how the LRT could integrate with communities.
Thank you for your participation and feedback, which will be reflected in the early designs shown during Stage 3 consultation.
A summary of Stage 2 consultation will be posted soon.
Stage 1: Thank you for participating
Your feedback will help shape our approach for Stages 2-5 of public involvement.
Stage 1 - What We Heard
About the Project
All 27 km of the Southeast to West LRT, from Mill Woods to Lewis Farms, are now in the preliminary engineering phase. In the preliminary engineering phase, the City will conduct a more detailed analysis of how the LRT will operate, as well as how the system will integrate into the existing and planned transportation network and adjacent communities. This phase is expected to be completed by 2013.
This line will use low-floor LRT vehicles.
The Downtown section of the Southeast to West LRT line will use a combination of 107 Street and 102 Avenue to connect with the West portion of the LRT line at MacEwan's City Centre Campus and the Southeast portion of the LRT line in the future Quarters development.
February 15, 2012 - City Council Approved Downtown LRT Concept Plan
Council and Committee Meeting Minutes - February 15, 2012 (Item 6.3)
December 5, 2011 – City Council Approves Funding for Land Acquisition
Council approved $102 million for land acquisition along the Southeast to West LRT line. A borrowing bylaw was approved by City Council on February 15, 2012.
December 5, 2011 - City Council Meeting Minutes (Item 3.2)
Public Involvement Process
The public involvement process for the Preliminary Design phase will involve a wide range of stakeholders and interested members of the public. Based on the diverse, unique needs across the study area, the Public Involvement team has created six consultation areas. The team will conduct a variety of activities in five consultation stages over the next two years. Click here to find out which consultation area you fit into.
Level of Involvement
In technical projects such as the Southeast to West LRT, the level of detail increases as the project moves from Concept to Preliminary Design. The opportunities for involvement also become more defined as plans are finalized.
The City conducts public involvement per the Public Involvement Policy and uses a continuum of public involvement. This continuum helps set clear expectations for all involved, informing stakeholders and the public about what they are able to influence and when.
