South LRT to Heritage Valley
Park and Ride
Preliminary engineering for the Park and Ride at Ellerslie Road and 127 Street is complete.
With the temporary 1,230 stall Park and Ride at Century Park Station in operation, the timelines for completing the detailed design and construction of the Park and Ride at Ellerslie Road are dependent on project approval from City Council.

About the Project
In July 2008, City Council approved the Concept Plan for the South LRT Extension from Century Park to the south City limit. The Concept Plan defined the alignment and station locations for this extension.
Preliminary Engineering: Century Park to Ellerslie Road
Preliminary Engineering for the first 4.5 km of this extension, from Century Park to Ellerslie Road, was completed in 2010.
Features of the 4.5 km extension include:
- An underpass at 23 Avenue
- Bridges crossing Blackmud Creek and Anthony Henday Drive
- An LRT Station, Transit Centre and Park and Ride facility at Ellerslie Road and 127 Street
- An operations and maintenance facility south of Anthony Henday Drive
South LRT Extension
With completion of preliminary engineering for this part of the South LRT extension, the City has defined how the LRT will operate technically and how it will be integrated into the existing landscape, adjacent communities and transportation system.
Concept Planning: Ellerslie Road to 41 Avenue SW
Concept Plans for the next 3 km of this extension, from Ellerslie Road to 41 Avenue SW, have been brought them up to date with the Neighbourhood Area Structure Plans for Heritage Valley Town Centre and Desrochers. These plans were approved by City Council in October 2009 and October 2010.
Features of the 3 km extension include:
- Street-level LRT for the full extension
- Embedded track in Heritage Valley Town Centre to promote the vision of a pedestrian friendly, transit-oriented and urbanized town centre
- Three LRT stations located:
- Approximately 850 m south of Ellerslie Road, within provincially owned lands
- At the heart of the future Heritage Valley Town Centre
- Approximately 420 m north of 41 Avenue SW, serving the Desrochers and Allard neighbourhoods

Land Use Planning
Land use planning is interconnected with the extension of the LRT south of Ellerslie Road. Approval of the NASPs for Heritage Valley Town Centre and Desrochers and confirmation of the LRT alignment, station locations and right-of-way requirements are complete. These will facilitate land use and transportation plans in these rapidly expanding residential areas.
Preliminary Engineering
Preliminary engineering is still required for the extension of the LRT south of Ellerslie Road, to confirm technical details such as the track structure and station configurations, as well as aesthetics and landscaping features for this segment of the South LRT extension. However, the updated Concept Plans give the City the information required to continue work with developers and land owners in the area, including the Province of Alberta.
